Thank You! - $3345 for the Furry Friends Food Bank
Our two month fundraising project for the Eastern Area Agency on Aging Furry Friends Food Bank ended on November 30th with donations from our clients totaling $1845 which we have matched with an additional $1500, bringing our total to $3345. All funds raised will be used to buy pet food, at wholesale prices, for distribution by the Furry Friends Food Bank. Thank you clients and community for supporting this effort. With your help we substantially surpassed our initial goal of $2000.
Green Acres Kennel Shop owner Don Hanson states: “Once again our clients and the community as a whole have really opened their hearts to this important project. By helping seniors feed their pets we are helping to ensure they have funds left over for their own food, medications, and other essentials like fuel oil. But even more importantly, we’re keeping that senior and their furry companion together. These donations will put smiles on lots of faces. However, what we’ve raised is only a small part of what is needed, so Green Acres will continue to serve as a collection point for food donations for the Furry Friends Food Bank throughout the year.” When asked if Green Acres will repeat this project next year Hanson said “You can count on it. And next year we’re going to set a higher goal because we know our community will step up to the challenge.”
Interested parties may follow the activities of the on the FaceBook page for the Friends of EAAA Furry Friends Food Bank at (https://www.facebook.com/GAKS.FFFFB).
Annie at the Penobscot Theatre Company – A Must See!
For the past few weeks Don has had the privilege and pleasure of working with the Penobscot Theatre Company on their production of Annie. He assisted with the casting of the part of Sandy back in August and since then has been working with the dog (ZuZu), her owners, the production staff , the two young actresses playing Annie and the rest of the cast. It’s been Don’s first involvement in a theatrical production since his high school days and he’s had a blast.
If you’re looking for a great night out, you do not want to miss this show. Its message of eternal optimism makes it perfect for the holidays. And hey, it’s got kids and a dog in it so it’s gotta be great!
Annie will run until December 29th. For ticketing information go to the PTC website (http://www.penobscottheatre.org/) or call them at: 207-942-3333

Changes in Retail Staffing
Paula has been working less in the retail area because she has another herniated disc and as such has some medical restrictions which prevent her from being able to handle larger dogs and carry out large bags of pet food for clients. Hilary has stepped into an increased role on the retail side of things and is doing an admirable job. We are also in the process of training some additional new staff members that will be playing a role in retail. Until we know more about the prognosis for Paula’s back, she will be doing more work behind the scenes.
Welcome Amanda & Miriam!
We have added two new members to our team; Amanda McCumber and Miriam Kates-Goldman. Both are in training and both will be working in the kennel and cattery as pet care technicians and will also be working in the store as customer service associates. Welcome to the team!
Staff Champions
Every month the Green Acres staff chooses two Staff Champions; someone who has done an exceptional job and someone who has publicly recognized another employee for doing an exceptional job. Hearty congratulations and thank you to our latest champions!

October – Hilary W. & Kaila M.

November – Paula H. & Brenda M.
Hanson Attends APDT
In October Don completed 30 hours of continuing education, while attending the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) annual educational conference in Cincinnati, OH/Covington, KY. He attended sessions on the evolving relationship between dogs and their people, the power of play, teaching clients how to evaluate a dog park and have a safe experience, managing change, and marketing. When asked what he liked best about the conference Don responded “The opportunity to network and exchange ideas with the best trainers from around the world. I’ve been involved with APDT since getting into the pet care profession in 1995 and APDT’s educational offerings have been a huge factor in the evolution of Green Acres training and behavior programs.”
Dutra and Hanson Attend Boarding and Daycare Seminar
In November Kate and Don traveled to Baltimore to attend the first Boarding and Daycare Expo. They attended sessions on daycare management, facility management and renovation, disease control, and training daycare staff on canine body language and playgroup management.
November Staff Anniversaries
Green Acres is very fortunate to have many staff members who have been with us for several years. We thank them for their service!
