Shop Local, Save Money and Support Your Community
As you shop for holiday gifts for your pets and the pets of others, we hope you will stop by Green Acres Kennel Shop. When you buy from us your money goes directly back into the local economy, unlike when you shop at those big box stores out by the mall. It has always been our goal to offer, healthy wholesome pet foods and quality pet supplies at fair and consistently competitive prices. We don't lower our prices for a week to lure you in and then raise them the following week once we have you hooked. We have consistently low prices with no gimmicks. Unfortunately, many assume that those big box stores that ship most of their profits out of the area will always beat us on price. The fact is we have a great selection of items and, as illustrated below, our prices are substantially lower. Check us out and help keep your hard earned dollars in your community and support your neighbors!

Canine Body Language seminar January 5th, 2013 - 10AM to 12PM
Don’t you wish you knew what your dog was thinking and trying to tell you? This is an opportunity for you to learn about canine body language and how your dog communicates their feelings, needs and wants with other dogs and with you.
On Saturday, January 5th, Green Acres Kennel Shop will be hosting a free seminar entitled Promoting Communication with Dogs Through Body Language taught by Certified Professional Dog Trainer, Kate Dutra.
Miscommunication between a dog and a person is often a reason for frustration and behavioral outbursts by both parties. It is our goal that at the conclusion of this seminar you will have a better understanding of the visual signals your dog gives with its body. Additionally, you will understand how your body language affects your communication with your dog and hence their behavior.
We have limited seating for this seminar so call us at 945-6841 if you wish to reserve a space.
“Ask the Trainer” Session January 5th, 2013 - 1PM to 4PM & January 12th, 2013- 10AM to 12PM
This is your opportunity to stop by and talk to Green Acres Kennel Shop’s training staff. We’ll be on hand to answer questions about our training classes, our behavioral consultations, our philosophy and how training can benefit your pets. Dogs are welcome as long as they are under control and on a regular 4 to 6ft leash. We would be happy to talk with you if your dog is reactive, aggressive, anxious, or fearful, but for your dog’s comfort ask that you keep them at home.
Training Demonstrations January 12th, 2013 -1PM to 4PM
Members of our training staff will demonstrate training techniques, tips and tricks with their own dogs. This session is for people only. We have limited seating for this seminar so call us at 945-6841 if you wish to reserve a space.
Screening: Tough Love: A Meditation on Dominance Dogs, February 9th, 2013 -2PM
Please join us as and filmmaker Chad Montrie when we host a screening of Tough Love: A Meditation on Dominance and Dogs. This documentary film examines the history of the dominance construct and the theory of pack hierarchy and the “alpha dog” in the dog training world. The film looks at how these flawed theories came about and how there has been a resurgence in this approach by some celebrity “trainers”, even though it is contraindicated by science. The film includes interviews with a wide variety of dog experts (Gail Fisher, Paul Owens, Dr. Sophia Yin, Nicole Wilde, and others) who describe their own cathartic moment when they realized that being dominant towards their dogs was not only unnecessary but was often damaging to the relationship between dog and person. Professor Montrie and members of the Green Acres Kennel Shop training staff will be on hand to answer questions at the conclusion of the film. You can learn more about this film at: http://www.anchorholdfilms.com/#
Featured Dog Food – Eagle Pack Original Adult
Eagle Pack Original Adult is one of our more popular, basic natural foods for adult dogs. Using three protein sources (Pork Meal, Chicken Meal and Anchovy and Sardine Meal) it provides a broad amino acid profile to help support great muscle tone. This food is supplemented with glucosamine hydrochloride to help maintain joint health and flaxseed to support skin and coat health.
While supplies last, you’ll find 30# bags of Eagle Original with a coupon for $3 off, dropping the price to $34.99 which results in a daily feeding cost $0.66 for a 50lbs dog. Stop by and pick up a bag before the coupons are all gone.
Featured Food- Murr for Cats and Urr for Dogs
Green Acres is now carrying a line of specialty pets foods from Murr of Iceland. Murr means to purr in Icelandic.
Established in a small fishing village on the far northwest coast of Iceland by a doctor of animal physiology, a doctor of animal nutrition and veterinarians, Murr is committed to delivering a top-of-the-line pet food source from organic, high quality, raw ingredients. The animals that are the source of these ingredients live free-range in the Icelandic highlands. Since the importation of farm animals to Iceland has been prohibited since the Viking era they are probably the most pure remaining in the world.
Murr® cat food is scientifically formulated from choice Icelandic meat and organ meat. Ingredients in our food are specially selected to fulfill the nutritive requirements of your cat without using any additives or preservatives. We only use ingredients passing strict veterinary inspection resulting in balanced low carbohydrate food containing a high quality component of animal protein. In general, dry foods may cause health problems due to the high content of carbohydrates, Murr decreases the chances of nutrient deficiency by eliminating plant materials. A pure animal diet ensures nutritional health.
Murr cat food is available in punches and comes in the following adults formulas; lamb, lamb and beef, lamb and pork and also comes in formulas for kittens and mature cats. When we tested this food with Green Acres’ store cats, Thelma and Louise, we were amazed at its high degree of palatability. Louise is “Ms. Finicky” and she was eating Murr like there was no tomorrow. It also cured her anemia within a few weeks.
Urr dog food, also from Murr of Iceland is prepared in the same manner from the same organic, raw ingredients as Murr for cats. Murr’s scientists acknowledge that the physiology of the dog indicates that while it is closer to being an omnivore than a cat, for all practical purposes it is a carnivore. As such Urr dog food is mostly animal protein. Urr dog food comes in the following formulas; Adult Lamb, Adult Lamb and Beef, Adult Lamb and Pork, Lamb for the Growing Dog, Adult Icelandic, and Mature Adult Lamb.
The Murr and Urr foods will not be for every pet due to their cost. This level of quality is not going to be inexpensive. However, they can be an excellent supplemental food for some dogs and cats and a primary food for those that will benefit the most.

Featured Treats
My Little Lion Cat Treats & My Little Wolf Dog Treats
We are now carrying My Little Lion treats for cats and My Little Wolf treats for dogs from Waggers™. Waggers used only the freshest ingredients cooked in small batches to ensure delicious flavor. Made with all-natural ingredients these low calorie gluten free treats can make you feel good about treating your pet.
All of these treats contain DHA Algae Meal to provide high levels of Omega 3 DHA. This fatty acid has been scientifically proven to help in the development of a dog’s central nervous system and visual development. Getting the DHA from algae is unique in that this harvest is sustainable (i.e. no fish are required) and contaminant free (DHA from farmed fish are prone to being exposed to contaminants).
My Little Lion treats for cats come in a salmon, tuna or chicken formula and are only 1.2 calories per treat. My Little Wolf treats for dogs come in a salmon, pork or turkey formula and at only 2.7 calories per treat are perfect for training.

Featured Product – Winter Coats for Dogs
It’s winter and that means the weather outside can often be cold and uncomfortable… even for a dog with their own free coats. This year we are again featuring stylish doggie outerwear from Eyecatchers Petwear. What makes these coats special? They’re made from recycled clothing. For example, right now we have a coat in the store that was originally a Wolverine shirt. These coats are stylish, well-made, environmentally smart, and going out of the store as fast as we bring them in. They are also very economical, priced from $16.50 to $25.50. Get one for your dog while you can.

Featured Supplements
Holistic Solution®
If your pet is prone to diarrhea, loose stool or an upset stomach you might want to check out Holistic Solution® a holistic digestive remedy from Eagle Pack. When your pet gets sick or even stressed, the good bacteria in their digestive tract can be overpowered by bad bacteria like E. Coli and Salmonella. Holistic Solutions contains digestive enzymes, probiotics and prebiotics. Digestive enzymes aid in digestion and ease the strain on the digestive system. Probiotics are the good, healthy bacteria that are supposed to occur naturally in your pet’s intestinal tract. The prebiotics are a food source for the healthy bacteria that helps keep them strong and healthy so that they can overcome the bad bacteria. Available in a powdered form, you just sprinkle Holistic Solutions on your pet’s food.
Holistic Transition®
Holistic Transition® is a supplement to make it easier for you to transition your pet from one food to another. Like Holistic Solution® it contains a mixture of digestive enzymes, probiotics and prebiotics. The type of Probiotics used in Holistic Transition® occurs naturally in the pet's digestive tract. Once the 7-day transition period is complete, the normal levels of Probiotics and Digestive Enzymes included in all Holistic Select® recipes, will maintain a healthy environment in the pet's digestive system, under normal conditions.

Winter Grooming Tips for Your Dog
(or How to Avoid the Dreaded “Spring Shave Down”)
It’s January in New England. The excitement of another holiday season has faded into memory, and we’re still facing several more weeks of icy, blustery weather. As we take extra precautions to stay warm and healthy in the frigid temperatures, it’s important to consider how we can help our canine companions thrive. What’s the best way to protect our dogs’ coats and paws from the cold-weather damage? Want to avoid having your dog’s coat shaved off in the spring due to the effects of winter wear and tear? Consider these winter grooming recommendations from Green Acres’ experienced grooming team.
- Brush your dogs more frequently. You may have noticed your dog shedding more hair during cold-weather months than during the rest of the year. This is due in large part to the warmer temperatures at which we keep our homes: as our dogs spend lots of time indoors enjoying the warmth, their coats respond by shedding moreOver time, this excess shedding can lead to problems with mats, especially in dogs with naturally dense undercoats. Brushing and/or combing your dogs more frequently in the winter can help prevent these winter-time tangles from developing. Regular brushing also helps distribute the natural oils in your dogs’ coat, which helps relieve the dryness that comes from extra time spent in a warm interior environment. If you struggle with brushing your dog ask us about The FURminator®. This grooming tool can greatly simplify brushing and turn a chore into a delight.
- Use doggy coats and sweaters outside, not inside. Doggy coats and sweaters come in all sizes, colors, and designs, and may well rival human coats as fashion statements! However as good they look, it’s important to remember that coats and sweaters continually rub against your dog’s coat, causing friction that can lead to hair knots and/or mats. It’s best to remove your dog’s garments when they come inside; if you choose to leave on a coat or sweater, make sure you remove them frequently to perform extra combing and/or brushing to keep the hair under the coat tangle-free.
- Take special care of their feet. Snow, ice, and salt can wreak havoc with your dog’s feet. To minimize the potential for injury, take the following steps:
- Rinse your dog’s feet regularly with warm water to remove salt, gravel, and ice
- Clip excess hair growing between pads of your dog’s feet to prevent ice and snow from sticking to the hair and forming painful “foot snowballs.”
- Keep toenails short; cold nails break more easily, especially when running through snow and ice.
- Before purchasing booties for your dog, see if they’ll keep baby socks on first.
- Set small grooming goals. Many of us become overwhelmed when faced with brushing out our dog’s coats more frequently than usual. Setting smaller grooming goals can help you tackle this task during cold weather (or any time of the year). Find five minutes per day to comb or brush your dog, and concentrate on one area of their body, like their leg, back, or chest. Over the course of a week, you can work through your dog’s coat, hopefully without causing either you or your companion undue stress.
- Ask us for help if you need it. Green Acres’ staff is here to help you and your furry companions with all their winter grooming needs. Paula and Amber can provide you with various levels of grooming service, from a bath/brush-out/nail trim to a full grooming session, including clipping and trimming. “Sanitary clips” focus on cleaning and trimming sensitive parts of your dog’s anatomy, like eyes, ears, and genital areas. If you’d like your dog’s feet shaved, or their nails trimmed, we’d be glad to assist you with these small but important tasks. And finally, if you’d just like some reassurance that the coat care and maintenance you’re doing at home is meeting the needs of your canine friend, feel free to call and arrange a time when Amber or Paula can meet with you and your dog. Providing you with feedback and encouragement in your efforts to care for your canine companion would be our distinct pleasure.
Best wishes for a warm and safe late winter season!
