  • We don’t discriminate – We accept mixes and purebreds, tiny pets and giant pets, 8-week-old pets up to aging seniors, and pets acquired from a shelter, rescue, breeder, friend, or neighbor. All we require of our guests is that they are physically and emotionally comfortable in our care, that we can safely handle them, and that they do not need constant medical care or observation.
  • We comply with international ethical standards – All our team members are members of the Pet Professional Guild (PPG) and have pledged to follow PPG’s Guiding Principles and our won Guiding Principles. We look forward to the day when all members of our profession subscribe to these same standards; our pets deserve no less.
  • We are knowledgeable about pet behavior – We are the only Maine facility with a Professional Canine Behavior Consultant (PCBC-A), accredited by the Pet Professional Accreditation Board (PPAB) on staff. We are committed to meeting your pet’s behavioral and emotional needs in addition to their physical requirements.
  • We are knowledgeable about pet nutrition – We believe fresh, wholesome, nutritious food is fundamental to optimal physical, mental, and emotional health. We want our pets and your pets to do more than survive; we want them to thrive! We sell many food brands because we do not believe any single brand will be best for all pets. We do not sell anything that we would not feed our pets.
  • Our pricing is simple – We don’t make everything ala carte. We also have a rewards program for those who are regular shoppers in our store, providing them with significant discounts on our boarding, daycare, and grooming services.
  • Recognized by the community – Green Acres Kennel Shop has been voted the Bangor Regions Best Kennel every year since 2002, the Best Pet Store every year since 2007, the Best Dog Trainer every year since 2011, and the Best Dog Groomer every year since 2013. Additionally, we were recognized by Best Businesses of America as one of the Top 10 Kennels and Top 10 Dog Trainers in New England for 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023.
  • We are experienced – Don and Paula Hanson have owned Green Acres since 1995.
  • Committed to Buying Local – Whenever possible we purchase supplies and services from local companies, working diligently to keep money in our local community.
  • We give back to our community – We are long-term supporters of the Bangor Humane Society, The Old Town Animal Orphanage, The Ark, and the Eastern Area Agency on Aging Furry Friends Food Bank, and other local organizations.
  • We give back to our profession – Don has served as the President of the Bangor Humane Society and the Association of Professional Dog Trainers. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Pet Professional Guild, where he chairs their Advocacy Task Force and the Shock-Free Coalition.
  • We are as passionate about being a FREE information resource as we are about selling products and services. Unfortunately, much of the information about dogs and cats on the internet is inaccurate and even potentially dangerous. We provide vetted, reliable information through Don’s blog, Words, Woofs, & Meows, on animal behavior, health issues, training, nutrition, and more. https://forcefreepets.com/blog/
