Why Buy Food and Supplies at Green Acres?

Don-Paula-cats-and-muppyWe Are A Local, Family Owned Business, Not a Big-Box Store that Sends Most of Its Money Out of State

Big-box stores are different from other kinds of retail businesses. Every $1 spent on retail results in 45 cents circulating through a community, according to the Institute for Local Self-Reliance. But large chain stores put just 13 cents of that $1 spent back through the local economy, according to the organization.  – Bangor Daily News February 24, 2011

Green Acres is a Bangor owned business, and the purchases you make here go directly back into the local economy. We want you to buy locally, and it is our practice to purchase as many of our supplies from local sources as well.

Convenient Location & Hours

We're located on Union Street, a mile and a quarter past the Airport Mall and across the street from Sprague's Nursery. We're open 7AM to 6PM Monday through Friday and 8AM to 5PM Saturday and Sunday.

Low Prices, Often the Best in the Area!

It has always been our goal to offer, healthy wholesome pet foods and quality pet supplies at fair and consistently competitive prices. We don't lower our prices for a week to lure you in and then raise them the following week once we have you hooked. We have consistently low prices with no gimmicks. Unfortunately, many assume that those big box stores that ship most of their profits out of the area will always beat us on price. The fact is we have a great selection of items and as illustrated below our prices our substantially lower. Check us out and help keep your hard earned dollars in your community and support your neighbors!

GAKS-2013-BOB-Store-1200x797When you buy an item at Green Acres, you are also purchasing product support. We will help you with feeding guidelines on a new food, finding the right brush for your pets coat, and using a crate to effectively house train your puppy. If you have questions after the sale, we are only a phone call away.

Pet food is a complicated business and unfortunately the manufacturers do NOT put all of the information on the labels needed to make an educated purchase decision. Green Acres has created and maintains a database on dog and cat food which includes much of the information that is "not readily available." The database focuses on the brands we sell, but we also try to obtain data on many of the brands we choose not to sell. With the aid of this database we can show you why we sell what we do, and exactly how much it costs to feed your pet on a daily basis. We believe that it is not in our best interest to sell you "the special of the month" or the food that has the highest profit margins. We would rather work with you to help you find the food that will be the best for your pet's health and have the least impact on your wallet!

Quality Products

The pet retail channel is filled with foods, treats, toys and other supplies; a few of exceptional quality and many of which are junk. We work hard to pick and choose products that meet our stringent quality standards and yet also offer a good value. Research in periodicals like the Whole Dog Journal, tests of new products on our own pets and conversations with professional colleagues that are as fussy as we are, help us find the best products. Additionally, many of our clients are as selective we are, and they often provide leads on exciting new products.

Quality pet food manufacturers you will find represented at Green Acres are: bf.f., Bravo, California Natural, Cats in the Kitchen, Eagle, Evangers, Evo, Fromm, Holistic Select, Innova, Merrick, Natural Planet Organics, Nutrisource, Pro Pac, PureVita, Solid Gold, Wellness, Weruva and Wysong. Treat product lines include; Bravo, Charle Bears, Cool Treats, Greenies, Jake's Dog Treat Mix, K9 Granola Factory, My Little Lion, My Little Wolf, Paws Gourmet, Pro-Treat Raw Naturals, Real Meat Bitz, Solid Gold, Sport Mix, Stewart and Zukes. Supply manufacturers include: Bach Rescue Remedy, Bitter Apple, Bitter Yuck, Booda, Canine Friendly, Cat Charmer, Comfort Zone, Dr. Daniels, Flexi, Furminator, Goughnut, Huggle Hunds, Jolly Pets, Kong, Lupine, Miller's Forge, Mutt Nose Best, Nature's Miracle, Nelson Bach, NutriSea, Petmate, Petrodex, Sea Jerky, Thunder Shirt, Tropiclean Fresh Breath, Tuff Lock, Tuffys,Vari Kennel, UrineOff, and Vista.

Laura-and-Mady-05We Have A Large Fenced Play Area for Your Pets to Play

Commitment to the Welfare of Your Pet

We Do NOT Sell Pets!

We firmly believe that if you are looking to get a dog, a cat, a puppy or a kitten, the first place you should look is at the Bangor Humane Society, or one of the many other animal shelters or rescue groups in our area. Thousands of wonderful, loving pet's who need new homes can be found at these shelters and rescue organizations.

If your heart is set on a pure breed puppy or kitten, please purchase them from a reputable breeder. Reputable breeders will ONLY sell directly to you; they do not sell their precious pets through retailers.

Green Acres offers a free, Selecting the Perfect Pet program, to help you determine the best pet for your family or life style. We would gladly provide you with our recommended criteria for selecting a reputable breeder.

We Do NOT Sell Products Designed to Hurt Your Pet

We do not sell, recommend or use shock collars, underground fence systems, choke collars or prong collars. The main purpose of these devices is to train a dog by causing severe pain. Pain is not necessary to train, nor is it the most effective way to train any animal. Ample evidence exists to show that these devices often cause serious aggression which may lead to euthanasia. As true pet lovers, we will not ethically support these products, the companies that make them, or the businesses that sell them.
