Green Acres offers a wide variety of room service options for our feline guests. These services include opportunities for play and social interaction, special treats, and grooming. Each service is described below.
Social ActivitiesContrary to popular belief, most cats are very social animals and treasure time spent with others. Green Acres offers the following optional, additional social activities for your feline friend while they are with us. Snuggle Time - Extra special time with your cat and one of our staff... just for snuggling, nuzzling and petting. The fee for this service is $2.50 and is available once or twice a day, or a specific number of times during your cat's stay with us. Individual Play - Indoor play for your cat with one of our staff and a variety of interactive toys. This service is recommended for the youngsters and other cats that enjoy a regular game of "catch the toy" or some other stimulating activity. At $2.50 per playtime, this service is available once or twice a day, or a specific number of times during your cat's stay with us.
TreatsWho doesn't appreciate a special snack now and then? Indulge your cat by choosing from the following savory options: Mmmmmm Mackerel - An Evanger's whole mackerel with gravy. Your cat will literally receive a whole mackerel from head to tail fin smothered in delightful (to cats) smelling gravy that cats adore. The cost for this special snack is $1.50 per serving and is available once a day, every other day, or a specific number of times during your cat's stay. Paw Lickin' Chicken - For those cats that are true bird lovers a can of Weruva's Paw Lickin' Chicken is a great option. Jam-packed with strips of real chicken, your pet's palate will surely be captivated and you can be confident that your feline friend is receiving nothing but the most wholesome of ingredients. This treat is $1.15 per serving and is available once a day, every other day, or a specific number of times during your cat's stay. Catnip Kick - An Espresso for our feline friends. Using only the highest quality organic catnip, this sprinkle of fun is $0.50 per serving and is available once a day, every other day, or a specific number of times during your cat's stay. Greenies for Cats - Ten tasty chewies to play with and devour while benefiting your pet's health. All natural Feline Greenies aid in dental hygiene as well as promote overall health with their added vitamins, minerals and taurine. At less than 2 calories per treat these are a great option for those felines that have a tendency to enjoy a few too many catnaps during the day. The cost for Greenies is $0.50 per serving and is available once a day, every other day, or a specific number of times during your cat's stay. Kitty Caviar - Tasty fish flakes sure to please even the most finicky feline. Made of 100% shaved and dried Menhadden fish, cats come running when they smell this hors d'ourve. Kitty Caviar is $0.50 per serving and is available once a day, every other day, or a specific number of times during your cat's stay.
GroomingWe offer the following grooming options, all performed by one of our professional Groomers. Nail Trim - Is your cat scratching your carpeting or furniture? At only $6.00, nail trims are a bargain (particularly compared to a new couch). Brushing - Help your cat to look and feel its best. We strongly recommend this service for all long haired cats staying with us more than 3 days to prevent matting. The price for this service depends on the breed, condition of the coat, and your cat's behavior. Please note that this service may not be possible for all cats; particularly those that are severely matted or may be anxious about handling.

Bangor Humane Socity Announces Spay / Neuter Clinic for Low Income Families
Thursday, 18 February 2010
The following is a press release from the Bangor Humane Society Thursday, February 18, 2010 - With just weeks before "kitten season" the Bangor Humane Society with the generous support of four area veterinarians is preparing for its first ever spay/neuter clinic that will be available to low-income cat owners later this month. The cooperating veterinarians and BHS understand that the need for low-cost programs for pet owners is at a critical level. Controlling the population of unwanted cats and kittens is largely dependent on people having their cats spayed or neutered. Two weeks ago the donations from three generous foundations allowed BHS to issue $17,000 worth of vouchers to low-income pet owners. Those vouchers allowed for pet owners to have their animals spayed and neutered for a nominal fee. Unfortunately while we thought the vouchers would last two to four months, they were gone in just five days, highlighting the intensity of the need for such help in this area. The need is so critical and Dr. Benson (Broadway Veterinary Clinic), Dr. Cloutier (Veazie Veterinary Clinic), Dr. Hanks (Kindred Spirits Veterinary) and Dr. Volk (Timberland Animal Hospital) and their staffs have volunteered to conduct this clinic with BHS staff and volunteers. The clinic will be held on Thursday, Feb. 25th and on Sunday, Feb. 28th. The program is on a first-come first-serve basis, by appointment ONLY (limited to 150 cats) and is available to anyone eligible for Food Stamps, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Social Security Disability (SSD) or Maine Care (Medicaid). Those interested in having their cat spayed or neutered can come to the BHS at 693 Mt. Hope Ave. in Bangor on Tuesday, February 23rd, beginning at 10am, and must provide proof of their low-income status. Qualifying cat owners will be issued vouchers with the date and time of their appointments. They will be able to drop off their cats and will then be contacted when its time to pick up their cats following the procedure. Cost to the cat owners for the procedure will be $50 (cash only). That fee also includes a general health check, and rabies and distemper shots if needed. The fee must be paid at the time of registration and is non-refundable. The money collected will go towards the costs of anesthesia and other supplies used for the clinic. "The timing of this clinic is so critical," said BHS Executive Director Suzan Bell, "Kitten season is upon us. It's nearly Spring and cats are reproducing. Last year we took in 1,000 more cats than we did the year before," she said. Last year BHS accepted 3,363 owner-relinquished cats and 581 stray cats. Most of those cats would not have arrived here if there were more low-cost ways for people to have their pets sterilized. Each year many of the cats that arrive on BHS' doorstep are pregnant of come with a litter of kittens. Note: This in an unprecedented event and one that we hope will encourage more area veterinarians to help in this extremely important attempt to gain some control of the spiraling numbers of abandoned and unwanted cats. On Sunday, Feb. 28, the veterinarians and their staffs will bring tables and set up shop in the BHS conference room and will be spaying and neutering approximately 150 cats. We hope you may consider sending your news teams over to cover this important and unique day. There will be ample photography opportunities and people on hand to supply you with the necessary information. Each year the BHS cares for and works to find forever homes for more than 5000 homeless pets. The Bangor Humane Society is an independent, non-profit organization, funded by local contributions and donations. Finding safe homes for animals is not just our mission here at the Bangor Humane Society, it's our tradition, and we thank the community for helping us accomplish this goal each day.

Green Acres is glad to be able to help the Bangor Humane Society by sponsoring a dog kennel and a cat condo every month. This is Lapras, the cat currently residing in our sponsored cat condo. At two years of age, Lapras was abandoned by her former owner. Thankfully, the individuals that found her alone and unwanted promptly brought her to the shelter. She is described as sweet, affectionate, and strikingly beautiful. If your looking for a kitty checkout Lapras as she awaits a new, loving home in the Green Acres suite at the Bangor Humane Society.
