[Bangor]- Green Acres Kennel Shop and The Woof Meow Show are proud to be supporters of the Association of Pet Dog Trainer's (APDT) 3rd annual National Train Your Dog Month (TYDM). Dog behavior problems and pet parent's failure to seek reliable, knowledgeable assistance with those problems are a major reason hundreds of thousands of dogs are turned into animal shelters every year. Sadly, these dogs are often euthanized. Even sadder, is that many of these problems would have never occurred if the dogs had been properly trained and socialized.
The APDT has designated January as National Train Your Dog Month to bring awareness to the importance of socialization and training for all pets! January was selected as the perfect month because so many animals are adopted and brought home during the winter holidays.
Green Acres offers a wide variety of dog training classes starting in January. We have classes for puppies as young as 8 weeks of age (Puppy Headstart), young adolescents 16 weeks of age and older (Basic Manners) as well as several level two and level 3 classes for dogs and their humans that are ready for more training.
Green Acres The Woof Meow Show, aired on WVOM, 103.9 FM and WVQM 101.3 FM every Saturday morning at 7:30AM and every Sunday evening at 8:30PM will feature training shows throughout the month of January. On December 31st Kate and Don will interview the APDT's Executive Director, Mychelle Blake, and will discuss all of the resources APDT makes available to pet parents at their website (http://www.trainyourdogmonth.com) and FaceBook page (www.facebook.com/NationalTrainYourDogMonth). For the remaining three weeks Kate and Don will discuss typical training issues people face with a new dog; 7JAN-Housetraining, 14JAN-Play Biting & Chewing, and 21JAN-Attention, Leave It and Take It. Handouts on these topics will be available at the Green Acres website (www.greenacreskennel.com) in the Information-Articles and Blog-What's New sections.
Green Acres will also be offering three free seminars during the month of January; 7JAN-Using Bach Flower Remedies to Reduce Pet Anxiety, 14JAN- Promoting Communication with Dogs Through Body Language, and 26JAN-Pet Nutrition in recognition of Train Your Dog Month. Since seating for the seminars is limited, we encourage preregistration by calling Green Acres at 945-6841.

Countless times clients have come into the store looking for a food that is exactly “x%” protein and “y%” fat because they have been led to believe that the Guaranteed Analysis panel on a pet food is the most important piece of information on the bag. What is alarming is that carbohydrates are missing from this list. Why is this missing? Because dogs and cats have no need for carbohydrates in their diet and if they were eating the type of food they would find in the wild the percent of carbohydrates would typically be 5% or less. Dry pet food, because of the manner in which it is manufactured, and to keep costs low, is typically around 50% carbohydrates.
