We’re Making May Dog Bite Prevention Month

Green Acres Announcement - Dog Bite Prevention Tip 300x300Dog bites are a serious public health problem. Half of all children will be bitten by a dog by the time they are twelve. The majority of these bites will be by the family dog or another dog known to the child. That is a statistic that Green Acres Kennel Shop would like to help change, and this is what we are doing about it.

  • We have become a member of the non-profit organization Doggone Safe (www.doggonesafe.com) and have staff members licensed to present their innovative “Be A Tree Program.”
  • We are holding two FREE “Be A Tree” sessions at Green Acres on Saturday, May 18th at 2PM and Sunday, May 19th at 1PM. Those wishing to attend should preregister by calling 945-6841, as space is limited.
  • We are available to present the “Be A Tree” program at local schools and for local youth groups at no charge.
  • We will be airing a daily dog bite prevention tip on WBZN-FM 107.3, WDEA-AM 1370, WEZQ-FM 92.9, WQCB-FM 106.5, WWMJ-FM 95.7, WBFM-FM 97.1, WLKE-FM 99.1, WMCM-FM 103.3, WABK-FM 104.3, WBAK-FM 104.7, and WBKA-FM 107.7  from April 24th through May 31st.
  • We will be posting a daily dog bite prevention tip on our FaceBook pages https://www.facebook.com/GreenAcresKennelShop and https://www.facebook.com/WoofMeowShow)
  • We have added a new dog bite prevention section to our website at: (http://www.greenacreskennel.com/dog-bite-prevention)
  • We have had Teresa Lewin, one of the founders of Doggone Safe on the Woof Meow Show discussing dog bite prevention. If you missed those shows you can download them for FREE from the Apple iTunes store or can listen to them by clicking on the two links below.

Be A Tree – Dog Bite Prevention for Kids

Green Acres Announcement - Dog Bite Prevention-2 300x300Do you know which of the dogs in the picture to the left are safe to approach? Does your child/grandchild/niece or neighbor know which dog to approach and which to avoid? Do the children you know what to do when a dog growls or snarls at them?

On Saturday, May 18th at 2PM and again on Sunday, May 19th at 1PM we will be holding a FREE Doggone Safe Be A Tree dog bite prevention class for grade school age children and their parents.

The “Be a Tree” program is an innovative and interactive dog bite prevention education program aimed at primary grade children. It teaches children how to read dog body language and how to act safely around dogs.  Instead of telling children “don’t do this and don’t do that”, the Be a Tree program empowers them with the knowledge they need to make safe decisions based on the body language and the actions of the dog and the situation at hand. The central message of the program is “Be a Tree” (stand still and quiet and don’t look at the dog) if a strange dog approaches or any dog is causing concern or becoming too frisky.

Those wishing to attend should preregister by calling 945-6841, as space is limited.

Congratulations Gwyn!

Gwen-dogs-199x300Dog training instructor, Gwyn Mattingly, of Green Acres Kennel Shop in Bangor, has earned Level I certification (CPDT-KA) through the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT), the internationally recognized certification program for professional dog trainers. Gwyn now joins the more than 1000-plus Certified Pet Dog Trainers located throughout the US and in a number of countries outside the US.

Certificants must have at least 300 hours of experience in teaching dog training classes before they are eligible to sit for the CPDT-KA examination. They must also provide a total of three professional references; one from a veterinarian, one from a dog training client and one from a colleague in the canine behavior profession. The exam covers instruction skills, animal husbandry, ethology, learning theory, equipment and business practices and ethics. Once certified, an individual must accumulate a minimum of thirty-sex CEUs every three years.

Gwyn has been an employee of Green Acres Kennel Shop since November 2009. She joins Angela Allen, Erin Bessey, Kate Dutra, and Don Hanson as the CPDT’s teaching at Green Acres. Gwyn is a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers.

ACTION ALERT: Contact Your Congressman

The Controlled Substances Act (CSA) makes it illegal for veterinarians to take and use controlled substances outside of the locations where they are registered, often their clinics or homes. This means that it is illegal for veterinarians to carry and use vital medications for pain management, anesthesia and euthanasia on farms, in house calls, in veterinary mobile clinics, or ambulatory response situations. Many vets have been doing the right thing but apparently now the DEA is cracking down on vets. There is a law before congress to allow veterinarians to use the drugs they need where and when they need to use them. As one who has been fortunate enough to have our veterinarian help a pet cross the rainbow bridge in the comfort of their own home, I want to see this law changed so that practice does not stop. Click on the link and you can read more about it and very easily send an email to your representative.

A Commentary on Dog Parks from Canine Behaviorist Dr. Karen London

Dog parks are controversial in that they are only as good as the dogs and people who visit them. In this commentary in Bark magazine animal behaviorist Dr. Karen London offers her thoughts on how dog parks could become less controversial and better places for dogs if only people would change their behavior. We think she’s nailed it.

Why You Want to Meet A Puppy’s Parents Before You Buy or Adopt

Whenever I'm asked what to look for when selecting a breeder for a puppy I have always routinely recommended that it is best to meet both of a puppy's parents. Genetics can affect behavior and if one of the parents has behavioral issues it seems obvious that this could increase the probability of a behavior problem in the future. A new study from the UK conforms that is a possibility. Pet parents who had seen only one parent were 2.5 times more likely to take their dog to see an animal behaviorist than those who saw both parents and those owners who saw neither of the puppy’s parents were four times more likely to see an animal behaviorist.

Green Acres Pet Tip of The Day Now on Eleven Local Stations

One of our missions at Green Acres at is to educate people about pets and their care. One way we have accomplished this is through a presence on local radio with our pet tip of the day, which started on WKSQ (KISS 94.5FM) back in 2001, and our weekly radio show the Woof Meow Show, which started on WVOM (103.9FM) back in 2005.

The goal for the pet tip of the day has always been to provide an accurate and interesting tidbit of information about adopting a pet, pet health, pet nutrition, pet behavior and upcoming pet events. The longer format of the Woof Meow Show allows us to explore pet issues in much more detail with experts from around the world. Topics in the past have included: Dealing with a Barking Dog, Picking the Perfect Pet, Insurance Issues for Pets, Acupuncture for Pets, Pet Nutrition, Litter Box Training and many others. Past guests on the show have been veterinarians (Dr. Mark Hanks, Dr. Judy Herman, and Dr. David Cloutier), authors (Robin Bennett, Susan Briggs, Steve Brown, Kathryn Miles, Pat Miller, and Joel Walton), representatives from various pet food and pet product companies and experts on behavior, training and pet care.

When the pet tip of the day started on The Mike and Mike Show on WKSQ (KISS 94.5FM) back in 2001, we gave KISS DJ Mike Dow some basic guidelines and he came up with a new tip every day, for five days a week for 11 years. Thank you Mike, you did a fantastic job in helping us get our message out.

At the end of 2012 The Mike and Mike Show ended its run and we decided to have the pet tip of the day follow Mike Dow and Mike Elliot to their new stations. In January the pet tip of the day started its run on The BIG Morning Show with Mike Dow on 104.7FM, 104.3FM, and 107.7FM. At the same time we also started running the pet tip of the day on The Bear Morning Show with Mike Elliot and Kat on 97.1FM, 99.1 FM and 103.3FM. We moved from one station to six and to keep things consistent Green Acres Don Hanson started prerecording the tips in advance and releasing them daily on FaceBook.

On Monday, March 18th Green Acres Pet Tip of the Day program evolved once again when we became the Pet Experts for the Townesquare media radio stations in Maine (WCQB- Q106.5FM, WBNZ-Z107.3FM, WEZQ-92.9FM, WWMJ-I95.7FM, and WDEA-1370AM)  adding an additional five stations where you can hear the pet tip of the day. You can also find us on the websites for these stations at:

Screening: Tough Love: A Meditation on Dominance Dogs,
February 9th, 2013 -2PM

tough love_bannerPlease join us as and filmmaker Chad Montrie when we host a screening of Tough Love: A Meditation on Dominance and Dogs. This documentary film examines the history of the dominance construct and the theory of pack hierarchy and the “alpha dog” in the dog training world. The film looks at how these flawed theories came about and how there has been a resurgence in this approach by some celebrity “trainers”, even though it is contraindicated by science. The film includes interviews with a wide variety of dog experts (Gail Fisher, Paul Owens, Dr. Sophia Yin, Nicole Wilde, and others) who describe their own cathartic moment when they realized that being dominant towards their dogs was not only unnecessary but was often damaging to the relationship between dog and person. Professor Montrie and members of the Green Acres Kennel Shop training staff will be on hand to answer questions at the conclusion of the film. You can learn more about this film by listening to the podcast of our interview with Professor Montrie (http://traffic.libsyn.com/woofmeowshow/WoofMeowShow-2013-01-26-Tough_Love_Chad_Montrie.mp3

Pet Health - The Importance of Dental Care for Pets

Pets Need Dental Care TooAccording to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) periodontal disease is the most commonly diagnosed problem in dogs and cats, and while 80% of people brush their own teeth every day, most do not do the same for their pets. Periodontal disease is a disease of the gums; it can lead to infections of the mouth. Left unchecked, the bacteria causing these infections can spread through the bloodstream and cause life-threatening conditions. Infections from periodontal disease have been linked to diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, kidney disease and other life threatening disorders as well as tooth loss. The AVMA estimates that by age two, 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats have some form of periodontal disease.

Some common signs of dental disease in pets are; bad breath, reluctance to chew or crying out when chewing, increased salivation, red and/or puffy gums, bleeding gums, a buildup of tartar/calculus on the teeth, and missing or loose teeth.

Your veterinarian will typically examine your pet's mouth and teeth during a routine physical exam. This is one reason why a through annual exam is so important for every pet. If necessary, the veterinarian may recommend a dental cleaning. This procedure requires general anesthesia. During the procedure the pet's teeth and gums will be thoroughly examined, scaled and polished. If a problem tooth is found, it may need to be extracted.

The best way to minimize professional cleanings at your veterinarian is to keep your pet’s teeth clean by home dental care. This can include brushing your pet's teeth (the general rule seems to be at least every 48 hours to be effective) or using special treats and or supplements to help keep teeth clean. There is an urban myth that feeding only dry food will keep your pet’s teeth clean and it is just that - a myth. Cats teeth may in fact benefit greatly from having canned (wet) food in their diet.

Featured Dog Food – Innova PRIME

Innova PrimeNatura’s Innova Prime formulas have been developed to address the need for a grain-free dog food based on a high-quality, animal-based protein exclusively sourced from a single category, such as poultry, or red meat or fish. All Innova PRIME formulas include real fruits and vegetables like farm-fresh apples and carrots. There are three Innova PRIME formulas; Grain Free Chicken & Turkey, Grain Free Salmon & Herring, and Grain Free Beef & Lamb Meal. The Innova PRIME formulas are appropriate for dogs of ALL life stages, including puppies, which is not always the case for grain-free formulas. In the case of large breed puppies, the Grain Free Salmon & Herring formula is recommended.

Featured Cat Food – Evo for Cats

evo cat_fishNatura’s line of Evo grain-free foods are one of our most popular products for cats. Since our cats are carnivores, it only makes sense that EVO’s high-animal protein content is a “purrrrrrfect” nutritional choice. Available in  three dry formulas (Turkey & Chicken Formula Dry Cat & Kitten Food, , Herring & Salmon Formula Dry Cat Food and Weight Management Dry Cat Food) and four canned formulas (95% Chicken & Turkey Canned Cat Food, 95% Beef Canned Cat Food, 95% Venison Canned Cat Food, and 95% Duck Canned Cat Food) Evo is a natural choice for any cat.

We stock the Chicken & Turkey and Beef cans the Venison and Duck cans may be special ordered by the case.

Featured Treats – Bravo Raw Bones

BravoRawFoodDietLogoThere are some folks that feed their pet a diet of raw food or at least use raw bones as a way of keeping a dog's teeth clean and healthy. Please note that not all veterinarians are comfortable with this practice, nor is it a good practice if you have a dog with food guarding issues.  We, however, have routinely fed raw bones over the years and our dogs have loved them and we believe they have contributed to better dental health. Here at Green Acres, we sell Bravo Raw Bones in the store because we feel they offer a superior product to what you might get at the supermarket.  Before feeding raw bones you might want to review this article on the Bravo website -

Featured Products - Dental Health

February is National Pet Dental Health Month so we are featuring three of our favorite products that can be used to help keep your pet’s teeth clean and healthy.

Wysong DentaTreat™

dentatreatPaula and I have been using DentaTreat™ with our pets since it first came out several years ago. We will be the first to admit that we are not very diligent about brushing our pets’ teeth. It's a difficult habitat to establish and so easy to break. That's what makes DentaTreat perfect for people like us - you just sprinkle it on your pet's food at every meal and... voila! The dental-active natural cheeses, minerals, and apple polyphenols in DentaTreat go to work, keeping their mouths clean and healthy. Yeah, we know... that sounds way too good to be true, but the fact is when we use DentaTreat with the fur kids it has greatly reduced our need for cleanings at the veterinarians. If you want all of the technical details, you can read more at - http://bit.ly/yxM1Oj

Check the coupons below for a special offer on Wysong DentaTreat

TropiClean Fresh Breath

TropiCleanFreshBreath 300x240TropiClean's line of fresh breath products are one way you can keep your pet’s breath fresh and fight periodontal disease without brushing. 93% of users of the Fresh Breath line have reported cleaner teeth in less than two weeks and 86% have noticed better breath in less than one week.

Fresh Breath Clean Teeth Gel for dogs and cats works fast and naturally with no brushing required. You simply apply directly to the teeth daily. Typically you can reduce application to two times per week after the first 30 days. Alternatively you might wish to try Fresh Breath Instant Fresh Foam which helps keep your dog’s teeth clean when used daily.

Fresh Breath LiquidFloss + TriFlossBall is a product which uses your dog’s natural instincts to chew and play to help keep their teeth clean. You simply spray LiquidFloss on the TriFlossBall, or any rope toy, and initiate a game of tug-o-war. The unique polymer material used in the TriFlossBall helps remove harmful bacteria and food particles that accumulate on your dog’s teeth while massaging their gums and flossing their teeth.

Fresh Breath Water Additive provides cats and dogs with essential daily oral hygiene, promoting healthy gums and fresh breath for up to 12 hours.  You simply add one capful of the additive to your pet’s 160z water bowl every time you refill it.

Check the coupons below for a special offer on Fresh Breath Clean Teeth Gel

Featured Product – The Thundershirt

ThunderShirtThe ThunderShirt can be a very useful tool for reducing and even eliminating dog anxiety caused by fear of thunder or fireworks, separation or travel, and even generalized anxiety.

The ThunderShirt uses gentle, constant pressure which has a calming effect on the nervous system similar to the manner in which veterinarians use pressure to relax cattle during administration of vaccinations or pressure shirts are used with children with behavioral problems.

When we first heard of the ThunderShirt we were skeptical. We had tried a similar product in the past which was not only difficult to put on the dog, but did not seem to have the desired effect. For the last year we have been selling the ThunderShirt and love what we are seeing. We have had clients come in reporting that their dog, who previously was extremely reactive to other dogs which made walking an ordeal, was much calmer and more manageable anytime he wore the Thundershirt and can now pass by dogs on the street with no problems. Additionally we have staff members who use the shirt on their dogs and they report that in a storm, their dogs no longer shake pace or tremble and in fact will lie down and simply sleep.

While its level of effect varies from dog to dog and situation to situation, there is no question that we are skeptics no longer.

Check the coupons below for a special offer on a ThunderShirt

Save When You Have Your Pet Groomed When Boarding

Did you know that if you have your dog groomed when boarding with us, you will not be charged for your dog’s last day of boarding? That’s effectively a $20 to $25 discount off your dog’s grooming. When you request that your dog be groomed during boarding, they will be groomed the last day of their scheduled stay and will be ready to pick-up mid-afternoon.

New Boarding, Daycare and Grooming Rates

Effective March 1st

It’s been four and a half years since we increased our boarding and daycare rates. Since then our utility, heating, insurance, supply, and labor costs have risen significantly. As a result we will be raising our boarding, daycare and grooming rates so that we can continue to provide you and your pets with the quality of service you expect.

Boarding for Dogs

Whereas in the past we have charged for playtimes and snuggle times, the basic rate for a dog will now include one playtime of your choice; individual play, group play or snuggle time. You may add on additional plays at the cost of $2.50 per session.

Green Acres Kennel Shop reserves the right to board animals separately should they feel it is in the best welfare of the animals to do so. If animals need to be boarded separately, you will be charged for individual kennels.

Boarding for Cats

Our spacious cat kennels allow for ample room for your cat to move around and play or just hang out while here. We have a large playroom filled with cat furniture that is used to rotate our boarding cats through on a daily basis; the opportunity to spend a day in the playroom is included with the basic rate. Some cats need a day or two to acclimate, so staff will determine when they are ready to go into the playroom.

Grooming for Dogs & Cats

You can expect a modest increase in our base grooming rates for dogs and cats of approximately $1.00. We will be continuing to offer our frequent groomer discount; if your pet is groomed every 6 weeks or less, you will receive 10% off the cost of the total grooming.

Due to the high degree of variability in grooming prices which are based upon breed, size, condition, behavior and specific style it is difficult to give exact quotes. Please feel free to contact us if you for base rates and ranges for your specific pet.

The Importance of Spaying and Neutering Your Pet

By: Stacey R. Coventry, BHS Public Relations Manager

With Suzan Bell and Dr. Mark Hanks

It happens everywhere. In every community and in every state, there is a pet overpopulation problem resulting in a high number of homeless animals. In the U.S., there is an estimated 6-8 million homeless animals entering animal shelters every year. Only half of these animals are adopted, according to the ASPCA (the Animal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).

Why Spay and Neuter 300x200The Bangor Humane Society (BHS) alone takes in over 5,000 animals a year. Two-thirds of those animals are cats. The reality is that every time an unneutered dog finds his way out of his yard to visit the female dog down the street, or the indoor/outdoor cat comes home pregnant once again, the result is often another unwanted litter of dogs or cats. Even if they are placed into homes, it is still possible for them to end up in shelters once they become too much responsibility or they reproduce the next generation of homeless puppies or kittens.

Reducing the number of unwanted pets in the U.S. is the most significant societal benefit that spaying and neutering our pets can have. By reducing the pet overpopulation problem, we alleviate the strain and burden placed on shelters nationwide. Consider this; one unspayed female cat that produces an average of three litters a year with 4.5 kittens in each litter will produce 91,511,383 cats in just a seven year time frame. One unspayed female dog and her puppies can produce over 67,000 dogs in just six years. It is just as important to spay or neuter pet rabbits. Rabbits reproduce faster than dogs or cats and often end up in shelters as well.

At this rate, shelters easily reach capacity and become overwhelmed with unwanted pets. The reality is there just aren’t enough homes for all these pets. This puts and overwhelming strain on shelters, forcing them to make hard decisions, like ones often resulting in euthanasia.

Fortunately, for BHS, the current pet population issue has not yet put them in a position in to make life and death decisions based on time or space. But, staff fear that can easily change in the future, if individuals don’t begin taking responsibility to spay/neuter their pets.

“If we truly respected and honored our pets, then we would all take responsibility to spay/neuter our own pets to ensure that every pet has a home,” says Suzan Bell, Executive Director of the Bangor Humane Society. “That is our responsibility as a pet owner and as society who claims to care so deeply for its animals.”

Spay/neuter is the only permanent, 100-percent effective method of birth control for dogs, cats and rabbits. Spaying/neutering every pet not only has a significant societal impact, but many medical benefits for pets as well.

Spaying—removing the ovaries and uterus of a female pet—is a veterinary procedure that requires minimal hospitalization and offers lifelong health benefits. Neutering—removing the testicles of your male dog or cat—will vastly improve your pet’s behavior and keep him close to home.

According to Dr. Mark Hanks, DVM of Kindred Spirits, the medical advantages of spaying your female pets is a reduction in breast cancer. Dogs that are never spayed have a 1 in 4 chance of developing breast tumors. If they are spayed before their first heat, the chance is less than 1 in 1000. Also, spaying eliminates heat cycles and potential for uterine infection and significantly reduces the risk of ovarian cancer.

Furthermore, Dr. Hanks states that there are also several medical advantages of neutering male pets. Neutered males are less likely to roam and have trauma or injuries resulting from fights with other animals.  Neutering also eliminates male marking behavior and the development of testicular cancer, and reduces prostate disease.

Additionally, Dr. Hanks eases pet owners’ concerns about the recovery of pets after they undergo spay/neuter surgery. Newer anesthetics and under the skin sutures allow for a safer surgery with a quicker recovery period. Also, the younger a pet undergoes the surgery, the faster and easier he/she will bounce back.

The Humane Society of the United States has recognized the medical and social benefits of spay/neuter and has designated the month of February as spay/neuter month to help educate the public. While each pet adopted from the Bangor Humane Society is spayed and neutered, BHS has also committed to participate in public spay/neuter awareness not just in February, but year round.

BHS was recently awarded over $20,000 in grant dollars from the Belvedere Animal Welfare Fund of the Maine Community Foundation, and from other generous local foundations to be disbursed to qualifying individuals through vouchers to spay/neuter their cat or dog through the participating veterinarians in the local area.

The State of Maine has also developed a website, www.spaymaine.org to gather information on statewide spay/neuter initiatives and low-cost spay neuter programs for individuals.

By spaying and neutering your pet or helping to raise awareness on the pet overpopulation dilemma, you too can become an important part of the solution.

Shop Local, Save Money and Support Your Community

As you shop for holiday gifts for your pets and the pets of others, we hope you will stop by Green Acres Kennel Shop. When you buy from us your money goes directly back into the local economy, unlike when you shop at those big box stores out by the mall. It has always been our goal to offer, healthy wholesome pet foods and quality pet supplies at fair and consistently competitive prices. We don't lower our prices for a week to lure you in and then raise them the following week once we have you hooked. We have consistently low prices with no gimmicks. Unfortunately, many assume that those big box stores that ship most of their profits out of the area will always beat us on price. The fact is we have a great selection of items and, as illustrated below, our prices are substantially lower. Check us out and help keep your hard earned dollars in your community and support your neighbors!

Canine Body Language seminar
January 5th, 2013 - 10AM to 12PM

Ember-headturn-nose lick-320x320Don’t you wish you knew what your dog was thinking and trying to tell you? This is an opportunity for you to learn about canine body language and how your dog communicates their feelings, needs and wants with other dogs and with you.

On Saturday, January 5th, Green Acres Kennel Shop will be hosting a free seminar entitled Promoting Communication with Dogs Through Body Language taught by Certified Professional Dog Trainer, Kate Dutra.

Miscommunication between a dog and a person is often a reason for frustration and behavioral outbursts by both parties. It is our goal that at the conclusion of this seminar you will have a better understanding of the visual signals your dog gives with its body. Additionally, you will understand how your body language affects your communication with your dog and hence their behavior.

We have limited seating for this seminar so call us at 945-6841 if you wish to reserve a space.

“Ask the Trainer” Session
 January 5th, 2013 - 1PM to 4PM & January 12th, 2013- 10AM to 12PM

This is your opportunity to stop by and talk to Green Acres Kennel Shop’s training staff. We’ll be on hand to answer questions about our training classes, our behavioral consultations, our philosophy and how training can benefit your pets. Dogs are welcome as long as they are under control and on a regular 4 to 6ft leash. We would be happy to talk with you if your dog is reactive, aggressive, anxious, or fearful, but for your dog’s comfort ask that you keep them at home.

Training Demonstrations
January 12th, 2013 -1PM to 4PM

Members of our training staff will demonstrate training techniques, tips and tricks with their own dogs. This session is for people only. We have limited seating for this seminar so call us at 945-6841 if you wish to reserve a space.

You can learn more about this film at: http://www.anchorholdfilms.com/#

Featured Food- Murr for Cats and Urr for Dogs

logo-murr-of-icelandGreen Acres is now carrying a line of specialty pets foods from Murr of Iceland. Murr means to purr in Icelandic.

Established in a small fishing village on the far northwest coast of Iceland by a doctor of animal physiology, a doctor of animal nutrition and veterinarians, Murr is committed to delivering a top-of-the-line pet food source from organic, high quality, raw ingredients. The animals that are the source of these ingredients live free-range in the Icelandic highlands. Since the importation of farm animals to Iceland has been prohibited since the Viking era they are probably the most pure remaining in the world.

Murr® cat food is scientifically formulated from choice Icelandic meat and organ meat. Ingredients in our food are specially selected to fulfill the nutritive requirements of your cat without using any additives or preservatives. We only use ingredients passing strict veterinary inspection resulting in balanced low carbohydrate food containing a high quality component of animal protein. In general, dry foods may cause health problems due to the high content of carbohydrates, Murr decreases the chances of nutrient deficiency by eliminating plant materials. A pure animal diet ensures nutritional health.

Murr cat food is available in punches and comes in the following adults formulas; lamb, lamb and beef, lamb and pork and also comes in formulas for kittens and mature cats. When we tested this food with Green Acres’ store cats, Thelma and Louise, we were amazed at its high degree of palatability. Louise is “Ms. Finicky” and she was eating Murr like there was no tomorrow. It also cured her anemia within a few weeks.

Urr dog food, also from Murr of Iceland is prepared in the same manner from the same organic, raw ingredients as Murr for cats. Murr’s scientists acknowledge that the physiology of the dog indicates that while it is closer to being an omnivore than a cat, for all practical purposes it is a carnivore. As such Urr dog food is mostly animal protein. Urr dog food comes in the following formulas; Adult Lamb, Adult Lamb and Beef, Adult Lamb and Pork, Lamb for the Growing Dog, Adult Icelandic, and Mature Adult Lamb.

The Murr and Urr foods will not be for every pet due to their cost. This level of quality is not going to be inexpensive. However, they can be an excellent supplemental food for some dogs and cats and a primary food for those that will benefit the most.

Winter Grooming Tips for Your Dog

(or How to Avoid the Dreaded “Spring Shave Down”)

It’s January in New England. The excitement of another holiday season has faded into memory, and we’re still facing several more weeks of icy, blustery weather. As we take extra precautions to stay warm and healthy in the frigid temperatures, it’s important to consider how we can help our canine companions thrive. What’s the best way to protect our dogs’ coats and paws from the cold-weather damage?  Want to avoid having your dog’s coat shaved off in the spring due to the effects of winter wear and tear? Consider these winter grooming recommendations from Green Acres’ experienced grooming team.

  • Brush your dogs more frequently. You may have noticed your dog shedding more hair during cold-weather months than during the rest of the year. This is due in large part to the warmer temperatures at which we keep our homes: as our dogs spend lots of time indoors enjoying the warmth, their coats respond by shedding moreOver time, this excess shedding can lead to problems with mats, especially in dogs with naturally dense undercoats. Brushing and/or combing your dogs more frequently in the winter can help prevent these winter-time tangles from developing.  Regular brushing also helps distribute the natural oils in your dogs’ coat, which helps relieve the dryness that comes from extra time spent in a warm interior environment. If you struggle with brushing your dog ask us about The FURminator®. This grooming tool can greatly simplify brushing and turn a chore into a delight.

  • Use doggy coats and sweaters outside, not inside. Doggy coats and sweaters come in all sizes, colors, and designs, and may well rival human coats as fashion statements! However as good they look, it’s important to remember that coats and sweaters continually rub against your dog’s coat, causing friction that can lead to hair knots and/or mats. It’s best to remove your dog’s garments when they come inside; if you choose to leave on a coat or sweater, make sure you remove them frequently to perform extra combing and/or brushing to keep the hair under the coat tangle-free.

  • Take special care of their feet. Snow, ice, and salt can wreak havoc with your dog’s feet. To minimize the potential for injury, take the following steps:
  • Rinse your dog’s feet regularly with warm water to remove salt, gravel, and ice
  • Clip excess hair growing between pads of your dog’s feet to prevent ice and snow from sticking to the hair and forming painful “foot snowballs.”
  • Keep toenails short; cold nails break more easily, especially when running through snow and ice.
  • Before purchasing booties for your dog, see if they’ll keep baby socks on first.

  • Set small grooming goals. Many of us become overwhelmed when faced with brushing out our dog’s coats more frequently than usual. Setting smaller grooming goals can help you tackle this task during cold weather (or any time of the year). Find five minutes per day to comb or brush your dog, and concentrate on one area of their body, like their leg, back, or chest. Over the course of a week, you can work through your dog’s coat, hopefully without causing either you or your companion undue stress.

  • Ask us for help if you need it. Green Acres’ staff is here to help you and your furry companions with all their winter grooming needs. Paula and Amber can provide you with various levels of grooming service, from a bath/brush-out/nail trim to a full grooming session, including clipping and trimming. “Sanitary clips” focus on cleaning and trimming sensitive parts of your dog’s anatomy, like eyes, ears, and genital areas. If you’d like your dog’s feet shaved, or their nails trimmed, we’d be glad to assist you with these small but important tasks. And finally, if you’d just like some reassurance that the coat care and maintenance you’re doing at home is meeting the needs of your canine friend, feel free to call and arrange a time when Amber or Paula can meet with you and your dog. Providing you with feedback and encouragement in your efforts to care for your canine companion would be our distinct pleasure.

Best wishes for a warm and safe late winter season!

Thank You! – Marketing Survey Gift Certificate Winner

Last fall we asked you to participate in marketing survey to help us decide where we should spend our advertising and marketing efforts. A huge thanks to all of you that responded! All participants were entered into a drawing for a $250 gift certificate. The lucky winner was Joanne B. Thank you Joanne!

We’re still analyzing all of the data but have made some changes in our marketing as a result of what you have told us. For example, you’ll still find us in the yellow pages, but with a smaller presence.

Thank You! - $3345 for the Furry Friends Food Bank

fffb - funds raised -square for facebook photo uploadOur two month fundraising project for the Eastern Area Agency on Aging Furry Friends Food Bank ended on November 30th with donations from our clients totaling $1845 which we have matched with an additional $1500, bringing our total to $3345. All funds raised will be used to buy pet food, at wholesale prices, for distribution by the Furry Friends Food Bank. Thank you clients and community for supporting this effort. With your help we substantially surpassed our initial goal of $2000.

Green Acres Kennel Shop owner Don Hanson states: “Once again our clients and the community as a whole have really opened their hearts to this important project. By helping seniors feed their pets we are helping to ensure they have funds left over for their own food, medications, and other essentials like fuel oil. But even more importantly, we’re keeping that senior and their furry companion together. These donations will put smiles on lots of faces. However, what we’ve raised is only a small part of what is needed, so Green Acres will continue to serve as a collection point for food donations for the Furry Friends Food Bank throughout the year.” When asked if Green Acres will repeat this project next year Hanson said “You can count on it. And next year we’re going to set a higher goal because we know our community will step up to the challenge.”

Interested parties may follow the activities of the on the FaceBook page for the Friends of EAAA Furry Friends Food Bank at (https://www.facebook.com/GAKS.FFFFB).

Annie at the Penobscot Theatre Company – A Must See!

Annie-PosterFor the past few weeks Don has had the privilege and pleasure of working with the Penobscot Theatre Company on their production of Annie. He assisted with the casting of the part of Sandy back in August and since then has been working with the dog (ZuZu), her owners, the production staff , the two young actresses playing Annie and the rest of the cast. It’s been Don’s first involvement in a theatrical production since his high school days and he’s had a blast.

If you’re looking for a great night out, you do not want to miss this show. Its message of eternal optimism makes it perfect for the holidays. And hey, it’s got kids and a dog in it so it’s gotta be great!

Annie will run until December 29th. For ticketing information go to the PTC website (http://www.penobscottheatre.org/) or call them at: 207-942-3333

Changes in Retail Staffing

Paula has been working less in the retail area because she has another herniated disc and as such has some medical restrictions which prevent her from being able to handle larger dogs and carry out large bags of pet food for clients. Hilary has stepped into an increased role on the retail side of things and is doing an admirable job. We are also in the process of training some additional new staff members that will be playing a role in retail. Until we know more about the prognosis for Paula’s back, she will be doing more work behind the scenes.

Welcome Amanda & Miriam!

We have added two new members to our team; Amanda McCumber and Miriam Kates-Goldman. Both are in training and both will be working in the kennel and cattery as pet care technicians and will also be working in the store as customer service associates. Welcome to the team!

Staff Champions

Every month the Green Acres staff chooses two Staff Champions; someone who has done an exceptional job and someone who has publicly recognized another employee for doing an exceptional job. Hearty congratulations and thank you to our latest champions!

Hanson Attends APDT

apdt logo_prof_medIn October Don completed 30 hours of continuing education, while attending the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) annual educational conference in Cincinnati, OH/Covington, KY. He attended sessions on the evolving relationship between dogs and their people, the power of play, teaching clients how to evaluate a dog park and have a safe experience, managing change, and marketing. When asked what he liked best about the conference Don responded “The opportunity to network and exchange ideas with the best trainers from around the world. I’ve been involved with APDT since getting into the pet care profession in 1995 and APDT’s educational offerings have been a huge factor in the evolution of Green Acres training and behavior programs.”

Dutra and Hanson Attend Boarding and Daycare Seminar

In November Kate and Don traveled to Baltimore to attend the first Boarding and Daycare Expo. They attended sessions on daycare management, facility management and renovation, disease control, and training daycare staff on canine body language and playgroup management.

November Staff Anniversaries

Green Acres is very fortunate to have many staff members who have been with us for several years. We thank them for their service!

If you have not responded to our survey yet, there is still time and we would still greatly appreciate your feedback.

While we are fortunate for all of the many word-of-mouth referrals you give for us to family, friends and co-workers, like most businesses we also need to do a significant amount of marketing and advertising to keep bringing new clients in the door. We want to spend our marketing dollars wisely, because by doing so we can keep our expenses and our prices down. We would really appreciate it if you would click on the following link and complete our marketing survey. After completion if you provide contact information, you will be entered into a drawing for a $250 gift certificate. Thank you!

Help Us Help the Furry Friends Food Bank

FFFB window stickerWe are holding a fundraiser for the Eastern Area Agency on Aging Furry Friends Food Bank from October 1st through November 30th. Customers will be asked for a donation when making purchases and if over $1000 is raised, Green Acres Kennel Shop will match the donations dollar for dollar. All funds raised will be used to buy pet food, at wholesale prices, for distribution by the Eastern Area Agency on Aging Furry Friends Food Bank.

We believe that this is one of the most important fundraising drives we do every year. Many of the seniors in our community, as well as others on a fixed income, often have to make choices between feeding their pet or feeding themselves, purchasing medication or heating their homes during Maine’s long winter. The bond between people and their pets plays a vital role in the physical and mental health of both, especially those that are isolated. Sometimes a pet may be the only living thing a Senior interacts with on a daily basis. By helping them feed their pets, the Furry Friends Food Bank helps keep pet and person together. At this time of year when we reflect on all that we have to be thankful for, Green Acres wants to encourage everyone to consider the joy they can create by helping keep a pet and person together by donating to the Eastern Area Agency on Aging Furry Friends Food Bank.”

Interested parties may follow the activities of the fundraising drive on the FaceBook page for the Friends of EAAA Furry Friends Food Bank at (https://www.facebook.com/GAKS.FFFFB).

The Eastern Area Agency on Aging is an independent, nonprofit 501(c)3 organization serving Penobscot, Piscataquis, Hancock, and Washington counties dedicated to providing seniors, adults with disabilities and caregivers with a variety of options, opportunities, resources and referrals. (http://www.eaaa.org).

This cause is very important to us, and even more important to those that will benefit. Please forgive us if in our enthusiasm we ask you too many times. Thank you!

Nutri-Source-smNutriSource now has 6 grain free formulas for dogs; Chicken, Lamb Meal, Heartland Select (Bison, Chicken and Menhaden Fish Meal), Seafood Select (Salmon and Menhaden Fish Meal), Large Breed Chicken, and Large Breed Lamb. All would be excellent choices to put into rotation with any of the other NutriSource adult formulas, or if you want to go all grain free you could do that as well. Like all NutriSource foods, they qualify for our frequent buyer program; after you purchase 12 bags you get one free. If you have wanted to try your dog on a grain free diet, this would be a great place to start.

Please see the coupon section below for an offer on Nutrisource Grain Free Dog Food

Featured Treat: 100% Organic Little Stars Training Treats

Green Acres is now offering three varieties of Little Stars Training Treats; Cheddar, Sweet Potato and Peanut Butter in 9 ounce packages for $7.25. Your dog will love them because they taste so good!

Please see the coupon section below for an offer on Little Stars Training Treats

Featured Product: Orange Vests and Collars

It’s officially fall. The sun is setting earlier and the hunters are out so to keep safe it’s a good idea to make sure you and your dog can be easily seen. We try to stock a wide variety of orange options this time of year, but like snow tires and air conditioners when are supply is gone we may not be able to get any more until next year. Suit up while you can!

Doggie Kissing Booths - Good Idea or Unkind to Dogs?

The concept of a “kissing booth” as a fundraising attraction at a carnival or some other event is not new. However, doggy kissing booths, where a person pays to give a kiss or hug to an unfamiliar dog or to get a kiss from a dog, is a relatively new trend. As a dog lover and Certified Dog Behavior Consultant, I find the idea of a doggy kissing booth very disturbing. When I privately shared this concern with a group organizing a fundraising event for a local dog park, the leader of the group publically labeled me a “jerk” on the groups Facebook page. If caring for the well-being and safety of dogs and people makes me a “jerk,” then I will gladly wear that badge with honor.

So, why am I opposed to dogs being put on display at a doggie kissing booth? The answer is quite simple. Unlike people dogs, do not enjoy being kissed and hugged, particularly by people they do not know. Any qualified dog behavior consultant will tell you the same thing. In fact, kissing and hugging a dog, even by a child in its own family, is often what initiates a dog bite. Putting dogs in a position to be hugged and kissed by complete strangers, in a carnival like atmosphere, is going to be extremely stressful to most dogs further increasing the probability of a bite. That’s not smart, not kind and not something I would think any dog owner would knowingly do to a dog they truly cared about.

Secondly, but equally important, a doggie kissing booth sets a very poor example for children because it models, promotes and encourages inappropriate behavior by humans towards dogs.  Dog bites are a serious issue and Green Acres, like other pet care professionals throughout the country, works hard to educate children and their parents, teaching them how to and how not to interact with dogs. Do the organizers and supporters of events with a doggie kissing booth want to be responsible for a child being bitten in the future because that child saw adults kissing and hugging dogs at the event and therefore thought it is something that is okay to do?

Lastly, having a doggie kissing booth is a potential legal liability for the owner of the property where the event is being held, the organizers of the event and the individuals that are allowing their dogs to participate in the kissing booth. All would be wise to consult with their attorneys and insurance companies before participating in such a venture.

Behavior Tip: Does Your Dog Have Space Issues?

Does your dog try to hide behind you if a person or another dog gets too close? Do they bark and growl? Maybe they even lunge towards the other dog/person or try to run away. Sadly many people have the misconception that ALL dogs like, or should like, ALL people and ALL other dogs. The fact is that is just not true. Just like with people, not all dogs are extroverts and some may prefer that those that they do not know just stay away. A dog may need additional space due to 1) health issues, 2) because they are in training, 3) because they are being rehabilitated, or 4) because they are scared and reactive.

The Yellow Dog Project - http://theyellowdogproject.com/The_Yellow_Dog_Project/Home.html  is a web site that promotes identifying “dogs in need of space;” with a yellow ribbon on their leash. We think that this idea has great merit and want to spread the word so that if you see a dog with a yellow ribbon on their leash that you will do the kind and compassionate thing and give them some space. We hope that you will teach others, especially children, to do the same.

Movie Review: Tough Love: A Meditation on Dominance and Dogs

tough love_banner

Last weekend Paula and I were visiting our friend Gail Fisher in Manchester, NH and had an opportunity to attend a screening of Tough Love: A Meditation on Dominance and Dogs at Gail’s facility All Dogs Gym and Inn. This documentary, by filmmaker and history professor Chad Montrie, examines the history of dominance and the theory of pack hierarchy and the “alpha dog” in the dog training world. The film looks at how the dominance construct came to be and how there has been a resurgence in this approach by some celebrity “trainers”, even though it is not supported by science. As someone who entered the field of dog training when dominance was widely accepted, I could really empathize with the people in the film (Gail Fisher, Dr. Sophia Yin, Paul Owens, Nicole Wilde, and others) who described their own cathartic moment when they realized that being dominant towards their dogs was not only unnecessary but was often damaging to the relationship between dog and person. If you like dogs or if you work with them in any professional capacity, you need to see this film.

We are contemplating arranging for a screening of Touch Love here in the Bangor area. If that would be of interest, please drop me an email at click here

The first link below will take you to the Tough Love FaceBook page and the second will take you to the website for Anchor Hold Films where you can purchase either a DVD or watch the film online.

Caution: Dogs Running Loose near Green Acres

Several of you have commented on the chocolate Labrador Retriever and the small white dog you have seen running loose near and in the Green Acres’ parking lot. Rest assured, these are neither our dogs nor guests staying here. We have a neighbor who is letting these dogs run loose and we are as concerned for their safety as we know you are. The neighbor has assured us that they will be watching the dogs closer.

New Pet Detect Collars

In an effort to give nothing but the best of care, we have recently started using a new product in our dog boarding and daycare services; the Pet Detect Collar. While many of your pets are frequent guests at Green Acres and we know them well, these collars give us the added assurance of proper identification for all pets staying with us, not just our “regulars”. The collars use thermal imaging to inscribe the pet’s name, status information such as if your animal is epileptic, deaf, etc., their assigned kennel number as well as that your pet is a guest here at Green Acres. Our experience so far has been overwhelmingly positive. The Pet Detect collars help us to more quickly learn our new guests’ names without having to flip through paperwork. We also like to be able to board dogs and cats of the same family together when possible, but this can be problematic if the animals look very similar. With the Pet Detect collars, even if animals look similar, we are able to identify each pet correctly; particularly important if the animals are on medication. Another huge bonus has been in play group. It is not unheard of for us to have 10 labs here at any given time, so when we have dogs that look similar they can still go together at playtime and there is no risk for confusion when playtime is over.

Bangor Humane Society - Cats on Tour

[Bangor, ME] —Hey, have you heard? Cats on Tour is coming! No, not Cats the musical but wonderful, adoptable felines from the Bangor Humane Society. Each week their newly decorated van will travel to a different business location in the area in hopes to find a match for some of the amazing cats up for adoption. Each business will offer a gift incentive as a thank you to those who choose adoption.

The Bangor Humane Society is one of 50 animal rescue organizations nationwide competing in the ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge event, which begin August 1, 2012 and ends October 31, 2012. The Challenge aims to get more animals adopted or returned to their owners than ever before. Not only are we competing to “save more lives,” but also for a chance at the grand prize of $100,000 from the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®). The Bangor Humane Society’s goal during the event is to adopt out a minimum of 1200 animals during the three month competition.

In an effort to boost adoption numbers, all adult cats 7 months and older are fee waived now through October 31. (Adult dogs are 50% off). All pets are spayed/neutered, vet checked and behavior evaluated to ensure the best match possible. In addition to reducing adoption fees, BHS is going mobile!

“We hope to generate some great momentum and enthusiasm in the community around pet adoption,” says Stacey Coventry, PR Manager for BHS. “Our goal is to make pet adoption more accessible while partnering with different local organizations in support of our mission. Every match made is a life saved. We invite people to check out our “Cats on Tour” and to tell their friends.”

Cats on Tour will be here at Green Acres Kennel Shop on Friday, September 28th from Noon to 4PM. Each cat adopted here that day will go home with a free cat toy and four cans of b.f.f. cat food, compliments of Green Acres.

Featured Dog Food: California Natural Grain-Free

Cal Nat_webBecause of California Natural's healthy, natural ingredients and the fact that they use so few ingredients in their formulas, California Natural pet foods have always been one of our first recommendations for pets that have food allergy or intolerance issues. Their foods are limited to 3 central ingredients. For example the Chicken Meal and Rice formula includes; chicken meal, brown rice, rice and sunflower oil. A pet food can't be much simpler.

Since California Natural comes in three adult formulas (chicken, lamb, and herring) it has also been an excellent choice for pet guardians that want to rotate between different protein and carbohydrate sources; a practice we have been recommending for healthy dogs since 2005 (see Alternating Your Dogs Food Makes Sense at our web site at http://bit.ly/gUbwX2 and read Kate's tip below - Why Rotating Diets Makes Sense). This process is now even easier and with more variety, with the introduction of California Natural’s five grain free formulas (chicken, lamb, salmon, venison, and kangaroo). California Natural recognizes the value of rotational feeding (http://www.rotatewithconfidence.com/rotational.php) and its benefits; minimization of pickiness and boredom with diet, reduced development of food sensitivity and food intolerance, and the more diverse intake of macro and micronutrients.

For the above reasons and more, California Natural is a popular choice for our clients. Natura, California Natural's parent company, provides Green Acres with a frequent buyer program which allows us to provide you with a free bag of food after you purchase 10 bags of food. All we need to do is to clip the barcode off your bag at the time of purchase and when we have accumulated 10 barcodes for you, we send it to Natura and they send you a coupon good for free product at Green Acres.

So how can you learn more about California Natural?

  • Stop by and talk to our staff 7AM to 6PM, Monday thru Friday or 8AM to 5PM Saturday and Sunday.
  • Tune into the Woof Meow Show on WVOM 103.9FM or WVQM 101.3FM on Saturday May 5th at 7:30AM or on Sunday, May 6th at 8:30PM when Kate and Don interview Dr. Nathaniel Cook of Natura about California Natural and pet allergies. On Saturday, May 20th and Sunday May 21st we will talk more with Dr. Cook about California Natural's new grain-free diets and the benefits of dietary rotation.
  • Stop by on Saturday, May 19th and talk to Erin, one of our Natura reps who will be here with literature and samples.

Featured Cat Food: b.f.f.

b.f.f. (best feline friend) is an all natural, grain free, tuna based canned food made in a human food facility by the same makers of Weruva pet foods. Available in 8 recipes and three sizes 3 oz, 5.5 oz and 10 oz cans, our experience has been thatbff-leader cats find this food simply irresistible! The meat used in b.f.f. comes from hand cut filets of Skipjack Tuna, not the scraps used in so many other pet foods. The Skipjack Tuna used in these formulas is a small, surface dwelling tuna that’s population is considered to be healthy and abundant. The redder color flesh of this tuna is less visually appealing to the western market (which translates into lower cost for the consumer); however the tuna itself contains all of the same wonderful nutrients as the whiter meat found in some other tunas. An added bonus to the Skipjack Tuna is that since it resides closer to the surface and is smaller in size there is not the same concern for the fish being laden with toxins and heavy metals.

Featured Treat - Bravo Training Treats

BravoTrainingTreatinFingersHigh quality training treats are an essential component of any dog training program as well as your dog's daily training. The typical grocery store treat is filled with grains, preservatives, colors, and maybe even added sugar and salt. They're not only unhealthy, but they are not as powerful and rewarding as a high-quality, high-value meat based treat.

Green Acres currently carries three formulas of Bravo Training Treats;  All-Beef Hot Dogs, Turkey Bites, and Buffalo Bites. These treats are made from 100% muscle meats and are freeze dried so they are not greasy in your hands or pocket. They are tasty enough to make a valued reward but also small enough so they don't overwhelm your dog with calories. We have been doing a comparison with freeze dried liver and for many dogs these Bravo treats are every bit as powerful. They are an ideal option to use for recall, desensitization and any other behavior where you need a high-value treat. And they are not just for dogs! Kate, our Operation’s Manager, has indicated that her cat equally enjoys these treats and he is regularly rewarded with a little bit of All-Beef Hot Dog when he comes in from the outside (and who said cats can’t be trained?)

Pet Feeding Tip

Why Rotating Diets Makes Sense

Change - not a word that many pet food manufacturers wanted to hear, but definite music to our dogs’ ears and overall heath. The change that we are referring to is dietary rotation. When we first began discussing dietary rotation several years ago, many of our pet food manufacturers were livid! Today however, largely to meet consumer demand, many pet food manufacturers now are producing diets within their food lines that are designed for convenient rotation.

For years, the pet food companies have been successfully convincing many of us that changing our pet’s diet will result in digestive upset. And if you ever did try to switch foods, they were quite often proven correct and you would never make that mistake again! But when you step back and think about it from a canine evolutionary standpoint, does it even make sense? Dogs are scavengers. In its feral state a dog’s gastrointestinal tracts should be equipped to handle a variety of different foods in rapid succession – there is nobody providing a slow transition to a new diet.

So what has caused this change in our domesticated dog’s gastrointestinal tract? The answer in short is that, with the help of the pet food manufacturers, we have caused it. Let’s say for example that you purchase a 30# bag of dog food and it takes your dog 6 weeks to eat it. So for 6 weeks, aside from the occasional snack here and there, your dog eats nothing else. You were so pleased with the results of this food, that when you returned you purchased another 30# bag of the same food again and again. So now, for several months your dog has consumed only that one specific type and brand of food. Now I ask, if you were to only eat one thing for several months, even if it was of great quality, and you suddenly changed, would there not be a high probability that you too would be suffering from digestive upset?

The benefits of dietary rotation are many. The first that comes to mind is simply a decrease in food boredom; imagine what it would be like to eat the same thing every day for a week, yet we often ask our dogs to do it for a lifetime. Secondly is that by alternating diets we have the opportunity to broaden our dogs’ exposures to other meat, fat, grain, fruit and vegetable sources, thus introducing different macro and micronutrients for optimal long-term health; with increased exposure comes a healthier gut and the ability to handle a wider variety of foods without digestive upset. Thirdly, by rotating diets we can potentially decrease long term exposure to harmful pathogens and microbes found in some grains which can lead to chronic illness that may not appear until later in life.

Thankfully, many of the pet food companies are now offering lines that give the consumer the ability to easily rotate diets. This however does not mean that you need to stay within a specific brand line, even though the manufacturer wants you to. We actually would encourage the rotation of brands as well as food ingredients whenever possible, as different companies make use of different vitamin packs and sourcing for their primary ingredients. But if you are not comfortable with this, your dog will still benefit from change within a brand as opposed to no change at all.

When you do change you may notice some differences. In some case stools may be smaller and firmer, other times larger and softer. There will be some foods your dog prefers over others and you can note that preference. (I actually had a lab that HATED the duck formulas – go figure)! As you and your dog try out the foods, you will find that you will both develop a preference for certain ones and use those in your rotation. The key is to not be afraid to try something new; the pet food industry is always coming out with great new stuff, it’s not just chicken anymore! Remember, if your dog has a healthy gut and is accustomed to new foods, they will be able to handle the change.

Diet rotation is not for every dog, however. Although rare, there are some dogs with true food allergies that may be best left on the same diet. Others are on prescription diets or have specific health concerns and dietary changes should not be attempted until discussed with a veterinarian. But if you believe your dog would benefit from dietary rotation we encourage you to start today. If your dog has been consuming the same food for an extended period of time, chances are you will have to slowly transition to any new diet, but hopefully with a little patience and some yogurt you will be able to help your dog’s gut develop and regain optimal health, allowing you to transition foods rapidly with little to no mixing.

NOTE: We typically do not encourage rotation of dry diets for cats, particularly neutered males as there is the potential for a change in the pH of the urine which could lead to the formation of crystals in their urine.

Introducing APDT C.L.A.S.S

APDT ClassCanine Life and Social Skills (C.L.A.S.S.) is a new program developed by the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) based on input from both dog owners and non-dog owners, shelter workers, and professional dog trainers. C.L.A.S.S. has been designed in an effort to benefit not just pet owners and dogs, but the community as a whole!

C.L.A.S.S. has some similarities to the AKC Good Citizen Test or therapy dog testing, but in many ways it is also very different. It is a three-level evaluation in which dog guardians can demonstrate the real-life skills of their dogs, as well as demonstrate their own understanding of basic dog handling, training and care. There are three levels to C.L.A.S.S. (B.A., M.A., and Ph.D.), each requiring a higher level of training

The APDT developed C.L.A.S.S. with several end goals in mind. One of the major themes in the Canine Life and Social Skills program is to promote positive, ongoing training resulting in a stronger owner/dog bonds. Rather than focus on skills that are not often required in day to day life, C.L.A.S.S. emphasizes the need to train real-life practical skills and polite behaviors such as waiting until cued to exit a vehicle or building, calmly settling when asked to do so and walking nicely on a leash. Education of not just the dog, but also the human, is at the forefront of this program as it requires clients to become educated about canine behavior thus helping them to make appropriate choices for their canine companions when in social situations. As more and more student teams complete C.L.A.S.S., it is hoped that there will be more opportunities for well-behaved pets in society in general.  We here at Green Acres are very excited about this program and look forward to its continuing addition to our training curriculum. Currently Green Acres is offering a specific C.L.A.S.S. class (I know that sounds silly). Green Acres’ Operations and Training Manager Kate Dutra is an APDT C.L.A.S.S. Instructor and Evaluator.

To learn more about C.L.A.S.S. tune into the Woof Meow Show on WVOM 103.9FM or WVQM 101.3FM on Saturday May 19th at 7:30AM or on Sunday, May 20th at 8:30PM. You can also learn more at the APDT's C.L.A.S.S. website: http://www.mydoghasclass.com.

Don's C.L.A.S.S. Challenge

To give our training class students some motivation to complete the APDT C.L.A.S.S. program, Don has created a contest. The only requirement is that participants must be Green Acres’ clients and have successfully completed at least our Basic Manners training class.

  • $25 Green Acres Gift Voucher to the first Green Acres student team to complete their C.L.A.S.S. B.A. by the end of 2012.
  • $50  Green Acres Gift Voucher to the first Green Acres student team to complete their C.L.A.S.S. M.A. by the end of 2012.
  • $100  Green Acres Gift Voucher to the first Green Acres student team to complete their C.L.A.S.S. Ph.D. by the end of 2012.

Good Luck Becky!

In January of 1999 Becky Ruggiero came to Green Acres with her 10-month old Sheltie to discuss training, as well as some behavioral issues that she had observed in Lady. Becky enrolled herself and Lady in our Basic Manners class and Becky and Lady 300x363continued on through many of our other classes as she and Lady learned more about one another.  Becky demonstrated a passion for learning and teaching which lead to me inviting her to join our training staff as an assistant in August of 1999. She assisted with at least one night per week and all day Saturday and was learning more all the time. Becky was eventually promoted to Lead Instructor and then as soon as she met the necessary prerequisites, she sat for and passed her certification exam, becoming one of the first Certified Professional Dog Trainers on Green Acres staff.

Since January of 1999, Becky has added four more dogs to her life, rabbits, kittens, chickens, a husband and three children. She has been offered an expanded teaching opportunity at the University of Maine and sadly will be leaving Green Acres.  We want to thank Becky for her years of service, congratulate her on her new job, and let her know that she will be missed. We hope that as time permits Becky will again join our training staff at Green Acres.

Businesses We Use and Recommend

Green Acres, as well as Paula and I personally, use the products and services of a number of area businesses. Like Green Acres most of them are small and locally owned. Many, but not all are members of the Paul Bunyan Chapter of Business Networks International (http://www.bni.com/) an organization where we all help each other grow our businesses. This space in our newsletter will be used to recognize some of those businesses and their products.

Chute Contracting

Randy Chute and his crew at Chute Contracting have completed several maintenance and construction projects for us personally and for our business, Green Acres Kennel Shop.  They’ve torn down and replaced a mud room, reroofed and resided our home, rebuilt a laundry room, removed a deck and replaced it with a sun room with full basement and an attached deck, as well as countless, smaller maintenance projects.

You hear horror stories about contractors that never show up on time, that go over budget, or just don’t produce quality work. You never need to worry about that with Randy. His attention to detail and his insistence on quality work by his crew and any and all subcontractors will give you a home or addition you will treasure for years. And while it’s a small issue to some, when Randy and his crew are done they clean-up after themselves so all you need to do is to enjoy what they’ve created.

If you are considering a construction project, whether small or large, you owe it to yourself to talk to Randy Chute at Chute Contracting. - 989-6787/356-7515

Featured Pet Food: Wysong

Wysong was the first holistic pet food we offered at Green Acres. It was the summer of 1997 when the Wysong representative stopped by to try to convince us to start selling Wysong. We really weren't looking to offer another food and just as I was showing him the door we started talking about our dogs. It turned out he had a dog with similar urinary problems to our Cairn terrier Gus. He offered us six weeks' worth of Wysong food and supplements to see if it resolved Gus' long standing issue with urinary tract infections.  In six weeks time Gus was healthier than he had ever been and I called the Wysong representative to arrange for us to start offering Wysong at Green Acres.Wysong-logo-sm

What do we like best about Wysong? At the top of the list is the company's founder, Dr. Wysong. He is the only owner of a pet food company that has publicly proclaimed, on numerous occasions, that the best diet for our pets is fresh, whole food... not his or anybody else's pet food in a bag. He was also recommending dietary rotation (See our article on this subject by clicking here), a practice that makes so much sense. Additionally, Wysong uses only top quality ingredients and has a great line of dry, canned and freeze-dried foods using innovative packaging.

Featured Treat - NutriSea® Green-Bones

NutriSeaLogoGreen-Bones are a new product from our friends at NutriSea, located right down the coast in Stonington, Maine. They are more than a bone-shaped treat. Green-bones are a long lasting, nutritious dental bone that is wheat-free and highly digestible. Designed to promote oral health and fresh breath, Green-Bones include decaffeinated Green Tea for its excellent antioxidant properties and Sea Cucumber is added for joint health. If you are currently using that other green bone, you might want to give NutriSea Green-Bones a try!

Featured Products - GoughNuts

I cannot tell you how often we have had clients ask; "Can you recommend any toys that are safe for voracious chewers..... and indestructible?" We have some great toys we've recommended over the years but nothing is truly indestructible for all dogs and we often caution that dogs need to be supervised with most toys, at least initially. Well we are pleased to report that Paula has found a toy which has excellent built-in safety features and is so close to being indestructible that the manufacturer offers a lifetime guarantee. They're called GoughNuts.largegoughnut

GoughNuts come in sizes for small dogs to big dogs and in a variety of shapes (donut, stick, ball and cannoli). They are floatable, cleanable, rollable, chewable, recyclable, funable, and available at Green Acres! Designed and manufactured in the US, each GoughNut contains an internal, red indicator material. If you can see the red material the toy has been compromised and should be considered "unsafe" and disposed of or returned to GoughNuts for a replacement. GoughNuts is so confident that this will so seldom occur that their guarantee states "If your dog chews through the outside wear layer, Green or Black, to expose the indication layer, Red, GoughNuts will replace your toy." You do need to pay for shipping (currently $4.85) but that is a pretty impressive guarantee for a chew toy.

Checkout GoughNuts yourself in this YouTube video - http://bit.ly/Hhsuy8 or better yet, stop by Green Acres and buy a GoughNut for your dog!

Featured Service - Pet Pedicure Pass

Amber Trimming Nails-300x240At Green Acres we encourage regular, consistent nail trims for our canine and feline friends. This keeps their nails short and also keeps our furry friends comfortable. Additionally, by ensuring your pets nails are trimmed frequently, they become more accustomed to the process and hence more relaxed over time. However, we recognize that many of you prefer to have us trim your nails which is why we offer a monthly Pet Pedicure Pass.

Pet Pedicure Passes may be purchased for $75.00 and entitle your pet to one nail trim per month for twelve months. This results in a cost of $6.25 per nail trim and an annual savings of $21.00.

Pet Pedicure Pass Terms and Agreements:

  • Passes may be purchased in advance or at the time of the first nail trim and then used once a month for the next 11 months.
  • Clients may come in on any day of the month for a nail trim, except Holidays, unless the pet is boarding.
  • If a client does not come in on a particular month, the nail trim for that month is forfeited.
  • Appointments are not necessary for nail trims, but please be advised that there may be a slight wait during our busier times.
  • Clients are responsible for maintaining their Pet Pedicure Pass and it must be presented at the time of the nail trim, or the standard fee of $8.00 will be applied.
  • GAKS is not responsible for misplaced passes.
  • All dogs and cats arriving for nail trims must have proof of a current Rabies vaccination.

Cat Behavior Tip

Getting Your Cat to Like Their Carrier

Using a cat carrier is the safest way to transport your cat from your home to any other location. Unfortunately most cats see their carrier infrequently and when they do see it, it often means a trip to the veterinarian where they may be restrained, poked and prodded. As a result, many cats see the carrier as a predictor of bad times so it’s very appearance triggers their anxiety often making it difficult to get them in the crate, resulting in a physical struggle and ever increasing anxiety. When you do get where you are going the cat may be difficult to handle because they are so frightened.

We suggest frequent exposure to the carrier for all cats. Remove the door from the carrier and set it on the floor somewhere the cat can access it. Do not try to coax the cat into the carrier, let them explore it if and when they are ready. Cats are naturally curious and most of them love to crawl into things. Just put an empty box on the floor sometime and see what happens.Tyler in box 14SEP-4

To make the carrier even more rewarding, put a small dish with a tablespoon of your cat’s favorite canned food at the back of the carrier. Now getting in the crate will be very rewarding.

Once your cat becomes comfortable in its carrier, just leave it out as an optional sleeping area for your cat, continuing to randomly put food and treats inside.

A week or so before your scheduled trip put the door back on the carrier but leave it in the same location so that your cat can continue to access it. Two days before your planned trip put some canned food or your cat’s favorite treat in the carrier at least once a day. Continue this for two days after your cat comes home in the carrier and then randomly after that

You can use the same approach described above with a cat that already finds its carrier to be aversive. Just be patient as it will probably take much longer for your cat to start to see the carrier as safe. If you make no progress at all, you may want to try getting a different carrier.

Debunking Pet Food Myths

MYTH: Raw Meat & Bones Are Bad for Pets

In 1980 dry dog food was introduced in Australia for the first time. Previously most Australian dogs were fed a variety of leftovers from their guardians’ meals. Before the decade was over, Australian veterinarians started to see an increase in illness, as well as considerably more dental problems with dogs. In his book, Give Your Dog A Bone, Dr. Ian Bilinghurst, an Australian Veterinarian, postulated that this decrease in canine health was caused by the switch to dry dog food. In this first, and subsequent, books Dr Bilinghurst advocated for a switch to a Biologically Appropriate Raw Food (BARF) diet.  Soon veterinarians and dog lovers throughout the world were looking at the idea of a raw diet for both dogs and cats. Such diets became commercially available in the late 1990’s.

More and more people are looking at the natural diets of felines and canines, and as a result are feeding their pet’s raw meat and bones. In response many of the traditional pet food companies are actively warning people about the dangers of a raw diet. Again if we let commonsense prevail, this myth just does not hold up. Have you ever seen a cat eat a mouse? Who do you suppose cooks food for feral dogs?? Canines and felines, when left to their own devices, would eat a diet of fresh, whole food, including raw meat and bones, as well as “far from fresh” carrion that they might scavenge. They have survived doing exactly this for millions of years.

A major argument against feeding a raw diet, especially one composed of chicken has been the fear of the diet being contaminated with the salmonella bacteria. While raw chicken purchased at the supermarket is often laden with bacteria, the supermarket is not concerned because they know we will cook it before consuming it. The chicken used in commercial raw food diets is handled very differently than the chicken we eat. It is maintained at sub-zero temperatures throughout the production process to prevent bacterial contamination.

FACT: No commercial raw diet has been recalled for salmonella contamination; dry dog foods have. A point dry food manufacturers often neglect to mention is that their products are also susceptible to bacterial contamination.

There are risks feeding of raw diet, but if you take the necessary precautions and ensure your animal receives the appropriate nutrients, it can be quite safe and very nutritious. If you do decide to explore this option, take the time to educate yourself and read many of the excellent books on the subjects such as Ultimate Diet: Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats by Kymythy Schultze. You might also consider feeding one of the commercially prepared raw diets, available in the freezer section at Green Acres.

Requesting Donations from Green Acres

Paula and I have always believed that it is important to give back to our community. Over the years we have provided support to numerous organizations and individuals that have had a cause or a need that touched our hearts.

The organizations and individuals that we have supported over the years range anywhere from animal shelters and individual benefit auctions to senior centers and food drives. .In some cases our donations are on a regular schedule, in other case they are one-time events. Our donations are often in the form of gift bags or gift vouchers for services and products at Green Acres. It is our preference to give to local organizations that focus on helping animals, children, seniors and the environment; organizations that support social justice and that do not discriminate. We also do what we can to support individuals and families with a special need that are friends, friends of friends or clients.

It is not unusual for Green Acres to receive several requests for charitable donations every month. As much as we would like to, it is not financially possible for us to respond favorably in every case. In order for us to objectively and fairly evaluate each request we ask that all solicitations be in writing, preferably on the letterhead of the organization or individual seeking the donation. Each request should include:

  • An overview of the organization.
  • How you or your organization is familiar with Green Acres Kennel Shop.
  • Proof of the organization's 501(c) (3) not-for-profit tax exempt status.
  • An indication of what you are requesting (cash donation, services, merchandise, gift certificate, etc.).
  • A description of the project or event for which the donation will be used.
  • The date which the donation will be collected.
  • A name and contact information for an individual who can discuss any questions that we may have regarding this contribution.

If we have donated to your organization in the past year and have all of the above information on file, feel free to contact me by email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . We also have a form on our website (http://www.greenacreskennel.com/about-us/policy-on-charitable-contributions-and-donations) that you can use to provide this information.

We look forward to learning more about your organization and receiving your contribution request. You can expect to hear from us within four weeks of your submission.

Bangor Humane Society to Participate in ASPCA Mega Match-a-thon

Community Support Needed to Find Homes for Animals and Save More Lives

[Bangor, ME] — Bangor Humane Society in Bangor, ME announced that they are one of 55 animal rescue organizations receiving grant funding to participate in the first ASPCA ‘Mega Match-a-thon’ event, which will take place on March 30th, 31st, and April 1st. The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) is granting nearly $500,000 to support large-scale adoption events held simultaneously nationwide in an effort to save more lives of shelter animals.

“The event is a celebration of pet companionship and an opportunity to promote pet adoption,” says Suzan Bell, BHS Executive Director.  “Our goal through this adoption event is to not only to see each of our animals get adopted into loving homes, but to also collaborate with shelters across the state, so that all animals throughout Maine can be offered the same opportunity.  We hope to build a state-wide coalition that supports and advocates for pet adoption and we invite everyone in the community to join us. Working together we can save lots of animals and enrich the lives of new adopting families.”

Bangor Humane Society with be extending its business hours for this special event. BHS will be open 10 am -8 pm on Friday and Saturday and 11 am to 5 pm on Sunday. BHS will also be partnering with the Waterville Humane Society, who will be transferring some of their adoptable pets to BHS to be adopted during the event. The goal is to empty the shelter of every adoptable animal.

To prepare for the event, BHS will be closed Thursday, March 29th and will not be accepting any intakes of animals from Wednesday, March 28th until Monday, April 2nd when they return to their regular operating hours.

Some more event details are as follows:

  1. The event will feature a variety of family-friendly activities and special adoption fees.
  2. All adult cats 6 months and older will be fee waived.
  3. All puppies will be $230
  4. All kittens will be $100
  5. All dogs 6 months to 1 year are 50% off.
  6. All adult dogs over 1 year are fee waived.
  7. All adopted animals will come with free ID and collar and free microchip.
  8. Potential adopters need to be prepared with photo ID and payment for the adoption.
  9. If anyone is looking to adopt an adult dog then all family members must be present to do the visit, including any family dogs as a dog-to- dog visit will be required.

“We invite people from across the state to visit us during our ASPCA Mega-Match-a-thon. We encourage them to come with open minds and open hearts, as we hope to match every adoptable pet in our shelter into a loving forever home,” says Stacey Coventry, BHS PR Manager. “Our goal is for the first time to have an empty shelter and to find a match for each of our animals, like Murdoc, a 5 year old Thai Ridgeback mix that was recently adopted after spending over a year in two different Maine Shelters.”

The Bangor Humane Society is busy planning the event details, which includes the spay/neuter and vaccination of all adoptable pets prior to the event. They are also training a large group of volunteers to help make the event a success. Individuals can stay tuned as event details unfold by listening to Kiss 94.5, watching WABI, or visiting the web at www.bangorhumane.org or www.facebook.com/BangorHumane.

Individuals can support the event by making a monetary donation or by encouraging friends, families, coworkers, etc to attend the event and consider adoption first. Local businesses can get involved by sharing news about the event or donating food and supplies. MrD Lawn Care

Spring is here and it’s time to start thinking about spring cleanup, lawn mowing & landscaping services.  Green Acres uses MrD, a small local company, for mowing and other small projects around the property.  MrD is a small company with big results where the owner is at every job.  They have done a great job for us for the past two years at a very fair price.  Services include but aren't limited to spring cleanup, mowing, mulching, tree & shrub pruning, and small landscaping projects. If you are looking for a lawn services company that is reliable and fully insured, we recommend you give MrD a call for a free estimate. 299-4469

Please Welcome Our New Groomers!

A Total of 20+ Years of Professional Experience

Paula Alexander and Amber Horr-5MAR12-w-names 600x398Amber Horr and Paula Alexander will be joining the Green Acres staff on March 15th as Green Acres’ new grooming team. Committed to Green Acres pet friendly and holistic philosophies, Paula and Amber will be providing your pet with the quality grooming that helps them feel and look their best.

Paula Alexander has been grooming professionally since 1997 and has worked in both kennels and salons like Green Acres, as well as in a pet superstore. Paula first developed her love for all things canine while watching the Merv Griffin show and seeing the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show group winners make a guest appearance. After active duty in the Navy during the Gulf War, and several years employed in large corporations, the single mom needed to find more family friendly employment and apprenticed for four years to become a Master Pet Stylist. Fifteen years later Paula is every bit as passionate about the profession, the clients she serves and, of course, their pets. For many years Paula has bred and shown Standard Poodles under Tasseltop Kennels. Her last standard Vanna and her two feral cats, Pearla and Smidgeon, reside with her and her son. When asked what she likes best about grooming Paula stated "I love the end of my day when I get to watch the pets leave with a strut of pride, all happy to have wowed their pet parents with their new hair-do."

Amber Horr graduated from grooming school in 2006 and has worked as a professional groomer in a kennel, a veterinary hospital and a pet superstore. While growing up Amber was constantly learning everything she could about dogs and cats so a career in grooming was the perfect way for her to fulfill her love of animals. Amber is married and has two children and a Standard Poodle named TyTy and a miniature Schnauzer named Robin. When asked what she likes best about grooming Amber stated" It gives me an opportunity to help dogs and cats feel and look better. I love seeing how happy both the pet and pet parents are when I send them home after a grooming."

March 12th will be Paula and Amber’s first day on staff and we are booking appointments now. To book an appointment, call us at 945-6841. We are excited to announce that grooming will now be available seven days a week! Appointments can be made Monday through Friday from 7AM until 6PM and on Saturday and Sunday from 8AM until 5PM.

We want you to have the opportunity to meet and talk with both Amber and Paula in person. Please join us on Saturday, March 31st from 9AM to 5PM, or Sunday, April 29th from 1PM to 5PM for our "Welcome to Green Acres” Reception and Open House.

Check the coupon below for a special offer on your pet’s first full grooming with Amber or Paula.

Dogs at Play

GAKS-Playtime-27FEB12-13 400x319Don is in the process of updating our collection of photographs of our boarding and daycare clients at play. These are the photos that are displayed in the store. As Don completes a batch of photos he will be posting them in the photo section of our FaceBook page (www.facebook.com/GreenAcresKennelShop). So far, he's completed two playgroups which you can find at:  http://on.fb.me/AhIp2p and http://on.fb.me/wrJOMk).

If you don't see your pet in this batch, don't despair. This is a lengthy process and Don will be taking pictures throughout the year. It depends on many factors; his availability, lighting conditions, and the weather. If you like the Green Acres page on FaceBook, you'll automatically be notified when he uploads a new batch.

Featured Dog Food - Eagle Pack Original & Natural

While Supplies Last - Bonus Bags!

Eagle Original PorkEagle Pack's original formulas are great premium foods at a great price point. We've been selling Eagle since 1998 and have seen countless dogs thrive on these two formulas. Both have meat as a first ingredient and use whole grains rather than grain fragments. In the past year there have been more and more companies advertising that they are now adding beneficial probiotics to their brand. You haven't heard that from Eagle because they've been adding this important ingredient since before 1998! While they may not be a brand that is heavily advertised, they continue to manufacturer an innovative premium food at a very reasonable cost.

While supplies last we have 36lbs bonus bags of both of these formulas in stock. That's six additional pounds for the same price as the 30lbs bag. Pick one up today!

Featured Products - Kong Wobbler

Kong WobblerThe Wobbler is a KONG-shaped food dispensing toy and feeder that sits upright until pushed with a  dog's paw or nose, then dispenses treats or kibble as it wobbles, spins and rolls. The unpredictable movement keeps the toy challenging, even for seasoned Wobbler users. Use the Wobbler as an alternative to a dog bowl, and help to extend meal time and exercise your dog. The Wobbler is made of FDA food-approved, high-strength, plastic polymer and is Dishwasher safe. The top screws off from bottom for easy filling. The Wobbler comes in two sizes: Small (fits 1/2 cup of food), Large (fits 2 cup of food).

Featured Service - Sea Jerky for Dogs

With its 1200 mg of sea cucumber (trademarked as Sea Chondroitin®), and 280 mg of glucosamine HCL, Sea Jerky is an all natural, Maine made, jerky treat for dogs that helps with joint mobility. One strip daily is recommended for every 50 to 60 pounds of weight. At $0.65/strip tell us how many strips your pet requires. Sold by the full strip only.

Featured Service - Mmmmmmm Mackerel

Mmmmmm Mackerel – An Evanger's whole mackerel with gravy. Your cat will literally receive a whole mackerel from head to tail fin smothered in delightful smelling gravy that cats adore. Debunking Pet Food Myths

MYTH: Pets Should NEVER Get “People” Food

Notice I have the word people in quotes. Who decided that fresh, whole food was “people” food and that our pets should only be fed highly processed, fragmented, non-fresh food? Feeding your pet fresh, whole foods is probably one of the best things you can do for them. It will not upset the delicate balance of their diets as long as you take the time to educate yourself about which fresh foods are appropriate for your pet, what quantities are sufficient and which foods may be dangerous. Nor will it cause them to steal food or beg at the table, as it is how the food is delivered that causes this behavior.

Links Web Design

links-logo-7-25-2011Whether a business is small or large, having a website is becoming increasingly important. At the same time more and more people and companies, some of them of questionable repute, are contacting businesses to help them create their web presence.

When Green Acres decided to redesign our website in 2010, I knew we wanted to work with a local company with a reputation for providing quality work at a fair price. That's why we chose Ken and Kristy Kimball of Links (http://www.linksadvantage.com/ ) to host, redesign and maintain our website.

Links guided us through the process of redesigning our website for ease of use and maximum impact, because what good is a website if it doesn't bring you clients? They have also optimized our site so that search engines like Google find it and list us in a preferred position. We update our website frequently and Links maintenance agreement includes those changes.

If you are considering a website, whether small or large, you owe it to yourself to talk to Ken and Kristy Kimball at Links.

Elite Auto (The Shell on Hammond Street)

We all need gas and there are certainly many places we can fill our vehicles. Paula and I choose to get our gas at Elite Auto, the Shell station at 462 Hammond Street. The price is right and the service is superb. How many gas vendors do you know that still qualify as a service station? Elite Auto does! I really appreciate that they wash my windows as they fill my car, even when the weather is less than nice.  If you have a Green Acres calendar, make sure to use the Elite Auto coupon on the back.

An interesting article in the March 2012 Wired (The Forgetting Pill Erases Painful Memories Forever - Jonah Lehrer) discusses traumatic memories, how they are formed and recalled and how they can be erased. Some quotes to whet your appetite: "...every time we think about the past we are delicately transforming its cellular representation in the brain, changing its underlying neural circuitry." "...memory is less like a movie, a permanent emulsion of chemicals on celluloid, and more like a play-subtly different each time it's performed." "When we experience a traumatic event, it gets remembered in two separate ways. The first memory is the event itself, that cinematic scene we can replay at will. The second memory, however, consists entirely of the emotion, the negative feelings triggered by what happened." - http://bit.ly/zQ3NWV
