Featured Dog Food: California Natural Grain-Free

Cal Nat_webBecause of California Natural's healthy, natural ingredients and the fact that they use so few ingredients in their formulas, California Natural pet foods have always been one of our first recommendations for pets that have food allergy or intolerance issues. Their foods are limited to 3 central ingredients. For example the Chicken Meal and Rice formula includes; chicken meal, brown rice, rice and sunflower oil. A pet food can't be much simpler.

Since California Natural comes in three adult formulas (chicken, lamb, and herring) it has also been an excellent choice for pet guardians that want to rotate between different protein and carbohydrate sources; a practice we have been recommending for healthy dogs since 2005 (see Alternating Your Dogs Food Makes Sense at our web site at http://bit.ly/gUbwX2 and read Kate's tip below - Why Rotating Diets Makes Sense). This process is now even easier and with more variety, with the introduction of California Natural’s five grain free formulas (chicken, lamb, salmon, venison, and kangaroo). California Natural recognizes the value of rotational feeding (http://www.rotatewithconfidence.com/rotational.php) and its benefits; minimization of pickiness and boredom with diet, reduced development of food sensitivity and food intolerance, and the more diverse intake of macro and micronutrients.

For the above reasons and more, California Natural is a popular choice for our clients. Natura, California Natural's parent company, provides Green Acres with a frequent buyer program which allows us to provide you with a free bag of food after you purchase 10 bags of food. All we need to do is to clip the barcode off your bag at the time of purchase and when we have accumulated 10 barcodes for you, we send it to Natura and they send you a coupon good for free product at Green Acres.

So how can you learn more about California Natural?

  • Stop by and talk to our staff 7AM to 6PM, Monday thru Friday or 8AM to 5PM Saturday and Sunday.
  • Tune into the Woof Meow Show on WVOM 103.9FM or WVQM 101.3FM on Saturday May 5th at 7:30AM or on Sunday, May 6th at 8:30PM when Kate and Don interview Dr. Nathaniel Cook of Natura about California Natural and pet allergies. On Saturday, May 20th and Sunday May 21st we will talk more with Dr. Cook about California Natural's new grain-free diets and the benefits of dietary rotation.
  • Stop by on Saturday, May 19th and talk to Erin, one of our Natura reps who will be here with literature and samples.

Featured Cat Food: b.f.f.

b.f.f. (best feline friend) is an all natural, grain free, tuna based canned food made in a human food facility by the same makers of Weruva pet foods. Available in 8 recipes and three sizes 3 oz, 5.5 oz and 10 oz cans, our experience has been thatbff-leader cats find this food simply irresistible! The meat used in b.f.f. comes from hand cut filets of Skipjack Tuna, not the scraps used in so many other pet foods. The Skipjack Tuna used in these formulas is a small, surface dwelling tuna that’s population is considered to be healthy and abundant. The redder color flesh of this tuna is less visually appealing to the western market (which translates into lower cost for the consumer); however the tuna itself contains all of the same wonderful nutrients as the whiter meat found in some other tunas. An added bonus to the Skipjack Tuna is that since it resides closer to the surface and is smaller in size there is not the same concern for the fish being laden with toxins and heavy metals.

Featured Treat - Bravo Training Treats

BravoTrainingTreatinFingersHigh quality training treats are an essential component of any dog training program as well as your dog's daily training. The typical grocery store treat is filled with grains, preservatives, colors, and maybe even added sugar and salt. They're not only unhealthy, but they are not as powerful and rewarding as a high-quality, high-value meat based treat.

Green Acres currently carries three formulas of Bravo Training Treats;  All-Beef Hot Dogs, Turkey Bites, and Buffalo Bites. These treats are made from 100% muscle meats and are freeze dried so they are not greasy in your hands or pocket. They are tasty enough to make a valued reward but also small enough so they don't overwhelm your dog with calories. We have been doing a comparison with freeze dried liver and for many dogs these Bravo treats are every bit as powerful. They are an ideal option to use for recall, desensitization and any other behavior where you need a high-value treat. And they are not just for dogs! Kate, our Operation’s Manager, has indicated that her cat equally enjoys these treats and he is regularly rewarded with a little bit of All-Beef Hot Dog when he comes in from the outside (and who said cats can’t be trained?)

Pet Feeding Tip

Why Rotating Diets Makes Sense

Change - not a word that many pet food manufacturers wanted to hear, but definite music to our dogs’ ears and overall heath. The change that we are referring to is dietary rotation. When we first began discussing dietary rotation several years ago, many of our pet food manufacturers were livid! Today however, largely to meet consumer demand, many pet food manufacturers now are producing diets within their food lines that are designed for convenient rotation.

For years, the pet food companies have been successfully convincing many of us that changing our pet’s diet will result in digestive upset. And if you ever did try to switch foods, they were quite often proven correct and you would never make that mistake again! But when you step back and think about it from a canine evolutionary standpoint, does it even make sense? Dogs are scavengers. In its feral state a dog’s gastrointestinal tracts should be equipped to handle a variety of different foods in rapid succession – there is nobody providing a slow transition to a new diet.

So what has caused this change in our domesticated dog’s gastrointestinal tract? The answer in short is that, with the help of the pet food manufacturers, we have caused it. Let’s say for example that you purchase a 30# bag of dog food and it takes your dog 6 weeks to eat it. So for 6 weeks, aside from the occasional snack here and there, your dog eats nothing else. You were so pleased with the results of this food, that when you returned you purchased another 30# bag of the same food again and again. So now, for several months your dog has consumed only that one specific type and brand of food. Now I ask, if you were to only eat one thing for several months, even if it was of great quality, and you suddenly changed, would there not be a high probability that you too would be suffering from digestive upset?

The benefits of dietary rotation are many. The first that comes to mind is simply a decrease in food boredom; imagine what it would be like to eat the same thing every day for a week, yet we often ask our dogs to do it for a lifetime. Secondly is that by alternating diets we have the opportunity to broaden our dogs’ exposures to other meat, fat, grain, fruit and vegetable sources, thus introducing different macro and micronutrients for optimal long-term health; with increased exposure comes a healthier gut and the ability to handle a wider variety of foods without digestive upset. Thirdly, by rotating diets we can potentially decrease long term exposure to harmful pathogens and microbes found in some grains which can lead to chronic illness that may not appear until later in life.

Thankfully, many of the pet food companies are now offering lines that give the consumer the ability to easily rotate diets. This however does not mean that you need to stay within a specific brand line, even though the manufacturer wants you to. We actually would encourage the rotation of brands as well as food ingredients whenever possible, as different companies make use of different vitamin packs and sourcing for their primary ingredients. But if you are not comfortable with this, your dog will still benefit from change within a brand as opposed to no change at all.

When you do change you may notice some differences. In some case stools may be smaller and firmer, other times larger and softer. There will be some foods your dog prefers over others and you can note that preference. (I actually had a lab that HATED the duck formulas – go figure)! As you and your dog try out the foods, you will find that you will both develop a preference for certain ones and use those in your rotation. The key is to not be afraid to try something new; the pet food industry is always coming out with great new stuff, it’s not just chicken anymore! Remember, if your dog has a healthy gut and is accustomed to new foods, they will be able to handle the change.

Diet rotation is not for every dog, however. Although rare, there are some dogs with true food allergies that may be best left on the same diet. Others are on prescription diets or have specific health concerns and dietary changes should not be attempted until discussed with a veterinarian. But if you believe your dog would benefit from dietary rotation we encourage you to start today. If your dog has been consuming the same food for an extended period of time, chances are you will have to slowly transition to any new diet, but hopefully with a little patience and some yogurt you will be able to help your dog’s gut develop and regain optimal health, allowing you to transition foods rapidly with little to no mixing.

NOTE: We typically do not encourage rotation of dry diets for cats, particularly neutered males as there is the potential for a change in the pH of the urine which could lead to the formation of crystals in their urine.

Introducing APDT C.L.A.S.S

APDT ClassCanine Life and Social Skills (C.L.A.S.S.) is a new program developed by the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) based on input from both dog owners and non-dog owners, shelter workers, and professional dog trainers. C.L.A.S.S. has been designed in an effort to benefit not just pet owners and dogs, but the community as a whole!

C.L.A.S.S. has some similarities to the AKC Good Citizen Test or therapy dog testing, but in many ways it is also very different. It is a three-level evaluation in which dog guardians can demonstrate the real-life skills of their dogs, as well as demonstrate their own understanding of basic dog handling, training and care. There are three levels to C.L.A.S.S. (B.A., M.A., and Ph.D.), each requiring a higher level of training

The APDT developed C.L.A.S.S. with several end goals in mind. One of the major themes in the Canine Life and Social Skills program is to promote positive, ongoing training resulting in a stronger owner/dog bonds. Rather than focus on skills that are not often required in day to day life, C.L.A.S.S. emphasizes the need to train real-life practical skills and polite behaviors such as waiting until cued to exit a vehicle or building, calmly settling when asked to do so and walking nicely on a leash. Education of not just the dog, but also the human, is at the forefront of this program as it requires clients to become educated about canine behavior thus helping them to make appropriate choices for their canine companions when in social situations. As more and more student teams complete C.L.A.S.S., it is hoped that there will be more opportunities for well-behaved pets in society in general.  We here at Green Acres are very excited about this program and look forward to its continuing addition to our training curriculum. Currently Green Acres is offering a specific C.L.A.S.S. class (I know that sounds silly). Green Acres’ Operations and Training Manager Kate Dutra is an APDT C.L.A.S.S. Instructor and Evaluator.

To learn more about C.L.A.S.S. tune into the Woof Meow Show on WVOM 103.9FM or WVQM 101.3FM on Saturday May 19th at 7:30AM or on Sunday, May 20th at 8:30PM. You can also learn more at the APDT's C.L.A.S.S. website: http://www.mydoghasclass.com.

Don's C.L.A.S.S. Challenge

To give our training class students some motivation to complete the APDT C.L.A.S.S. program, Don has created a contest. The only requirement is that participants must be Green Acres’ clients and have successfully completed at least our Basic Manners training class.

  • $25 Green Acres Gift Voucher to the first Green Acres student team to complete their C.L.A.S.S. B.A. by the end of 2012.
  • $50  Green Acres Gift Voucher to the first Green Acres student team to complete their C.L.A.S.S. M.A. by the end of 2012.
  • $100  Green Acres Gift Voucher to the first Green Acres student team to complete their C.L.A.S.S. Ph.D. by the end of 2012.

Good Luck Becky!

In January of 1999 Becky Ruggiero came to Green Acres with her 10-month old Sheltie to discuss training, as well as some behavioral issues that she had observed in Lady. Becky enrolled herself and Lady in our Basic Manners class and Becky and Lady 300x363continued on through many of our other classes as she and Lady learned more about one another.  Becky demonstrated a passion for learning and teaching which lead to me inviting her to join our training staff as an assistant in August of 1999. She assisted with at least one night per week and all day Saturday and was learning more all the time. Becky was eventually promoted to Lead Instructor and then as soon as she met the necessary prerequisites, she sat for and passed her certification exam, becoming one of the first Certified Professional Dog Trainers on Green Acres staff.

Since January of 1999, Becky has added four more dogs to her life, rabbits, kittens, chickens, a husband and three children. She has been offered an expanded teaching opportunity at the University of Maine and sadly will be leaving Green Acres.  We want to thank Becky for her years of service, congratulate her on her new job, and let her know that she will be missed. We hope that as time permits Becky will again join our training staff at Green Acres.

Businesses We Use and Recommend

Green Acres, as well as Paula and I personally, use the products and services of a number of area businesses. Like Green Acres most of them are small and locally owned. Many, but not all are members of the Paul Bunyan Chapter of Business Networks International (http://www.bni.com/) an organization where we all help each other grow our businesses. This space in our newsletter will be used to recognize some of those businesses and their products.

Chute Contracting

Randy Chute and his crew at Chute Contracting have completed several maintenance and construction projects for us personally and for our business, Green Acres Kennel Shop.  They’ve torn down and replaced a mud room, reroofed and resided our home, rebuilt a laundry room, removed a deck and replaced it with a sun room with full basement and an attached deck, as well as countless, smaller maintenance projects.

You hear horror stories about contractors that never show up on time, that go over budget, or just don’t produce quality work. You never need to worry about that with Randy. His attention to detail and his insistence on quality work by his crew and any and all subcontractors will give you a home or addition you will treasure for years. And while it’s a small issue to some, when Randy and his crew are done they clean-up after themselves so all you need to do is to enjoy what they’ve created.

If you are considering a construction project, whether small or large, you owe it to yourself to talk to Randy Chute at Chute Contracting. - 989-6787/356-7515

Featured Pet Food: Wysong

Wysong was the first holistic pet food we offered at Green Acres. It was the summer of 1997 when the Wysong representative stopped by to try to convince us to start selling Wysong. We really weren't looking to offer another food and just as I was showing him the door we started talking about our dogs. It turned out he had a dog with similar urinary problems to our Cairn terrier Gus. He offered us six weeks' worth of Wysong food and supplements to see if it resolved Gus' long standing issue with urinary tract infections.  In six weeks time Gus was healthier than he had ever been and I called the Wysong representative to arrange for us to start offering Wysong at Green Acres.Wysong-logo-sm

What do we like best about Wysong? At the top of the list is the company's founder, Dr. Wysong. He is the only owner of a pet food company that has publicly proclaimed, on numerous occasions, that the best diet for our pets is fresh, whole food... not his or anybody else's pet food in a bag. He was also recommending dietary rotation (See our article on this subject by clicking here), a practice that makes so much sense. Additionally, Wysong uses only top quality ingredients and has a great line of dry, canned and freeze-dried foods using innovative packaging.

Featured Treat - NutriSea® Green-Bones

NutriSeaLogoGreen-Bones are a new product from our friends at NutriSea, located right down the coast in Stonington, Maine. They are more than a bone-shaped treat. Green-bones are a long lasting, nutritious dental bone that is wheat-free and highly digestible. Designed to promote oral health and fresh breath, Green-Bones include decaffeinated Green Tea for its excellent antioxidant properties and Sea Cucumber is added for joint health. If you are currently using that other green bone, you might want to give NutriSea Green-Bones a try!

Featured Products - GoughNuts

I cannot tell you how often we have had clients ask; "Can you recommend any toys that are safe for voracious chewers..... and indestructible?" We have some great toys we've recommended over the years but nothing is truly indestructible for all dogs and we often caution that dogs need to be supervised with most toys, at least initially. Well we are pleased to report that Paula has found a toy which has excellent built-in safety features and is so close to being indestructible that the manufacturer offers a lifetime guarantee. They're called GoughNuts.largegoughnut

GoughNuts come in sizes for small dogs to big dogs and in a variety of shapes (donut, stick, ball and cannoli). They are floatable, cleanable, rollable, chewable, recyclable, funable, and available at Green Acres! Designed and manufactured in the US, each GoughNut contains an internal, red indicator material. If you can see the red material the toy has been compromised and should be considered "unsafe" and disposed of or returned to GoughNuts for a replacement. GoughNuts is so confident that this will so seldom occur that their guarantee states "If your dog chews through the outside wear layer, Green or Black, to expose the indication layer, Red, GoughNuts will replace your toy." You do need to pay for shipping (currently $4.85) but that is a pretty impressive guarantee for a chew toy.

Checkout GoughNuts yourself in this YouTube video - http://bit.ly/Hhsuy8 or better yet, stop by Green Acres and buy a GoughNut for your dog!

Featured Service - Pet Pedicure Pass

Amber Trimming Nails-300x240At Green Acres we encourage regular, consistent nail trims for our canine and feline friends. This keeps their nails short and also keeps our furry friends comfortable. Additionally, by ensuring your pets nails are trimmed frequently, they become more accustomed to the process and hence more relaxed over time. However, we recognize that many of you prefer to have us trim your nails which is why we offer a monthly Pet Pedicure Pass.

Pet Pedicure Passes may be purchased for $75.00 and entitle your pet to one nail trim per month for twelve months. This results in a cost of $6.25 per nail trim and an annual savings of $21.00.

Pet Pedicure Pass Terms and Agreements:

  • Passes may be purchased in advance or at the time of the first nail trim and then used once a month for the next 11 months.
  • Clients may come in on any day of the month for a nail trim, except Holidays, unless the pet is boarding.
  • If a client does not come in on a particular month, the nail trim for that month is forfeited.
  • Appointments are not necessary for nail trims, but please be advised that there may be a slight wait during our busier times.
  • Clients are responsible for maintaining their Pet Pedicure Pass and it must be presented at the time of the nail trim, or the standard fee of $8.00 will be applied.
  • GAKS is not responsible for misplaced passes.
  • All dogs and cats arriving for nail trims must have proof of a current Rabies vaccination.

Cat Behavior Tip

Getting Your Cat to Like Their Carrier

Using a cat carrier is the safest way to transport your cat from your home to any other location. Unfortunately most cats see their carrier infrequently and when they do see it, it often means a trip to the veterinarian where they may be restrained, poked and prodded. As a result, many cats see the carrier as a predictor of bad times so it’s very appearance triggers their anxiety often making it difficult to get them in the crate, resulting in a physical struggle and ever increasing anxiety. When you do get where you are going the cat may be difficult to handle because they are so frightened.

We suggest frequent exposure to the carrier for all cats. Remove the door from the carrier and set it on the floor somewhere the cat can access it. Do not try to coax the cat into the carrier, let them explore it if and when they are ready. Cats are naturally curious and most of them love to crawl into things. Just put an empty box on the floor sometime and see what happens.Tyler in box 14SEP-4

To make the carrier even more rewarding, put a small dish with a tablespoon of your cat’s favorite canned food at the back of the carrier. Now getting in the crate will be very rewarding.

Once your cat becomes comfortable in its carrier, just leave it out as an optional sleeping area for your cat, continuing to randomly put food and treats inside.

A week or so before your scheduled trip put the door back on the carrier but leave it in the same location so that your cat can continue to access it. Two days before your planned trip put some canned food or your cat’s favorite treat in the carrier at least once a day. Continue this for two days after your cat comes home in the carrier and then randomly after that

You can use the same approach described above with a cat that already finds its carrier to be aversive. Just be patient as it will probably take much longer for your cat to start to see the carrier as safe. If you make no progress at all, you may want to try getting a different carrier.

Debunking Pet Food Myths

MYTH: Raw Meat & Bones Are Bad for Pets

In 1980 dry dog food was introduced in Australia for the first time. Previously most Australian dogs were fed a variety of leftovers from their guardians’ meals. Before the decade was over, Australian veterinarians started to see an increase in illness, as well as considerably more dental problems with dogs. In his book, Give Your Dog A Bone, Dr. Ian Bilinghurst, an Australian Veterinarian, postulated that this decrease in canine health was caused by the switch to dry dog food. In this first, and subsequent, books Dr Bilinghurst advocated for a switch to a Biologically Appropriate Raw Food (BARF) diet.  Soon veterinarians and dog lovers throughout the world were looking at the idea of a raw diet for both dogs and cats. Such diets became commercially available in the late 1990’s.

More and more people are looking at the natural diets of felines and canines, and as a result are feeding their pet’s raw meat and bones. In response many of the traditional pet food companies are actively warning people about the dangers of a raw diet. Again if we let commonsense prevail, this myth just does not hold up. Have you ever seen a cat eat a mouse? Who do you suppose cooks food for feral dogs?? Canines and felines, when left to their own devices, would eat a diet of fresh, whole food, including raw meat and bones, as well as “far from fresh” carrion that they might scavenge. They have survived doing exactly this for millions of years.

A major argument against feeding a raw diet, especially one composed of chicken has been the fear of the diet being contaminated with the salmonella bacteria. While raw chicken purchased at the supermarket is often laden with bacteria, the supermarket is not concerned because they know we will cook it before consuming it. The chicken used in commercial raw food diets is handled very differently than the chicken we eat. It is maintained at sub-zero temperatures throughout the production process to prevent bacterial contamination.

FACT: No commercial raw diet has been recalled for salmonella contamination; dry dog foods have. A point dry food manufacturers often neglect to mention is that their products are also susceptible to bacterial contamination.

There are risks feeding of raw diet, but if you take the necessary precautions and ensure your animal receives the appropriate nutrients, it can be quite safe and very nutritious. If you do decide to explore this option, take the time to educate yourself and read many of the excellent books on the subjects such as Ultimate Diet: Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats by Kymythy Schultze. You might also consider feeding one of the commercially prepared raw diets, available in the freezer section at Green Acres.

Requesting Donations from Green Acres

Paula and I have always believed that it is important to give back to our community. Over the years we have provided support to numerous organizations and individuals that have had a cause or a need that touched our hearts.

The organizations and individuals that we have supported over the years range anywhere from animal shelters and individual benefit auctions to senior centers and food drives. .In some cases our donations are on a regular schedule, in other case they are one-time events. Our donations are often in the form of gift bags or gift vouchers for services and products at Green Acres. It is our preference to give to local organizations that focus on helping animals, children, seniors and the environment; organizations that support social justice and that do not discriminate. We also do what we can to support individuals and families with a special need that are friends, friends of friends or clients.

It is not unusual for Green Acres to receive several requests for charitable donations every month. As much as we would like to, it is not financially possible for us to respond favorably in every case. In order for us to objectively and fairly evaluate each request we ask that all solicitations be in writing, preferably on the letterhead of the organization or individual seeking the donation. Each request should include:

  • An overview of the organization.
  • How you or your organization is familiar with Green Acres Kennel Shop.
  • Proof of the organization's 501(c) (3) not-for-profit tax exempt status.
  • An indication of what you are requesting (cash donation, services, merchandise, gift certificate, etc.).
  • A description of the project or event for which the donation will be used.
  • The date which the donation will be collected.
  • A name and contact information for an individual who can discuss any questions that we may have regarding this contribution.

If we have donated to your organization in the past year and have all of the above information on file, feel free to contact me by email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . We also have a form on our website (http://www.greenacreskennel.com/about-us/policy-on-charitable-contributions-and-donations) that you can use to provide this information.

We look forward to learning more about your organization and receiving your contribution request. You can expect to hear from us within four weeks of your submission.

Bangor Humane Society to Participate in ASPCA Mega Match-a-thon

Community Support Needed to Find Homes for Animals and Save More Lives

[Bangor, ME] — Bangor Humane Society in Bangor, ME announced that they are one of 55 animal rescue organizations receiving grant funding to participate in the first ASPCA ‘Mega Match-a-thon’ event, which will take place on March 30th, 31st, and April 1st. The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) is granting nearly $500,000 to support large-scale adoption events held simultaneously nationwide in an effort to save more lives of shelter animals.

“The event is a celebration of pet companionship and an opportunity to promote pet adoption,” says Suzan Bell, BHS Executive Director.  “Our goal through this adoption event is to not only to see each of our animals get adopted into loving homes, but to also collaborate with shelters across the state, so that all animals throughout Maine can be offered the same opportunity.  We hope to build a state-wide coalition that supports and advocates for pet adoption and we invite everyone in the community to join us. Working together we can save lots of animals and enrich the lives of new adopting families.”

Bangor Humane Society with be extending its business hours for this special event. BHS will be open 10 am -8 pm on Friday and Saturday and 11 am to 5 pm on Sunday. BHS will also be partnering with the Waterville Humane Society, who will be transferring some of their adoptable pets to BHS to be adopted during the event. The goal is to empty the shelter of every adoptable animal.

To prepare for the event, BHS will be closed Thursday, March 29th and will not be accepting any intakes of animals from Wednesday, March 28th until Monday, April 2nd when they return to their regular operating hours.

Some more event details are as follows:

  1. The event will feature a variety of family-friendly activities and special adoption fees.
  2. All adult cats 6 months and older will be fee waived.
  3. All puppies will be $230
  4. All kittens will be $100
  5. All dogs 6 months to 1 year are 50% off.
  6. All adult dogs over 1 year are fee waived.
  7. All adopted animals will come with free ID and collar and free microchip.
  8. Potential adopters need to be prepared with photo ID and payment for the adoption.
  9. If anyone is looking to adopt an adult dog then all family members must be present to do the visit, including any family dogs as a dog-to- dog visit will be required.

“We invite people from across the state to visit us during our ASPCA Mega-Match-a-thon. We encourage them to come with open minds and open hearts, as we hope to match every adoptable pet in our shelter into a loving forever home,” says Stacey Coventry, BHS PR Manager. “Our goal is for the first time to have an empty shelter and to find a match for each of our animals, like Murdoc, a 5 year old Thai Ridgeback mix that was recently adopted after spending over a year in two different Maine Shelters.”

The Bangor Humane Society is busy planning the event details, which includes the spay/neuter and vaccination of all adoptable pets prior to the event. They are also training a large group of volunteers to help make the event a success. Individuals can stay tuned as event details unfold by listening to Kiss 94.5, watching WABI, or visiting the web at www.bangorhumane.org or www.facebook.com/BangorHumane.

Individuals can support the event by making a monetary donation or by encouraging friends, families, coworkers, etc to attend the event and consider adoption first. Local businesses can get involved by sharing news about the event or donating food and supplies. For inquiries they can contact Stacey at 942.8902 ext 103 or email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. MrD Lawn Care

Spring is here and it’s time to start thinking about spring cleanup, lawn mowing & landscaping services.  Green Acres uses MrD, a small local company, for mowing and other small projects around the property.  MrD is a small company with big results where the owner is at every job.  They have done a great job for us for the past two years at a very fair price.  Services include but aren't limited to spring cleanup, mowing, mulching, tree & shrub pruning, and small landscaping projects. If you are looking for a lawn services company that is reliable and fully insured, we recommend you give MrD a call for a free estimate. 299-4469

Please Welcome Our New Groomers!

A Total of 20+ Years of Professional Experience

Paula Alexander and Amber Horr-5MAR12-w-names 600x398Amber Horr and Paula Alexander will be joining the Green Acres staff on March 15th as Green Acres’ new grooming team. Committed to Green Acres pet friendly and holistic philosophies, Paula and Amber will be providing your pet with the quality grooming that helps them feel and look their best.

Paula Alexander has been grooming professionally since 1997 and has worked in both kennels and salons like Green Acres, as well as in a pet superstore. Paula first developed her love for all things canine while watching the Merv Griffin show and seeing the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show group winners make a guest appearance. After active duty in the Navy during the Gulf War, and several years employed in large corporations, the single mom needed to find more family friendly employment and apprenticed for four years to become a Master Pet Stylist. Fifteen years later Paula is every bit as passionate about the profession, the clients she serves and, of course, their pets. For many years Paula has bred and shown Standard Poodles under Tasseltop Kennels. Her last standard Vanna and her two feral cats, Pearla and Smidgeon, reside with her and her son. When asked what she likes best about grooming Paula stated "I love the end of my day when I get to watch the pets leave with a strut of pride, all happy to have wowed their pet parents with their new hair-do."

Amber Horr graduated from grooming school in 2006 and has worked as a professional groomer in a kennel, a veterinary hospital and a pet superstore. While growing up Amber was constantly learning everything she could about dogs and cats so a career in grooming was the perfect way for her to fulfill her love of animals. Amber is married and has two children and a Standard Poodle named TyTy and a miniature Schnauzer named Robin. When asked what she likes best about grooming Amber stated" It gives me an opportunity to help dogs and cats feel and look better. I love seeing how happy both the pet and pet parents are when I send them home after a grooming."

March 12th will be Paula and Amber’s first day on staff and we are booking appointments now. To book an appointment, call us at 945-6841. We are excited to announce that grooming will now be available seven days a week! Appointments can be made Monday through Friday from 7AM until 6PM and on Saturday and Sunday from 8AM until 5PM.

We want you to have the opportunity to meet and talk with both Amber and Paula in person. Please join us on Saturday, March 31st from 9AM to 5PM, or Sunday, April 29th from 1PM to 5PM for our "Welcome to Green Acres” Reception and Open House.

Check the coupon below for a special offer on your pet’s first full grooming with Amber or Paula.

Dogs at Play

GAKS-Playtime-27FEB12-13 400x319Don is in the process of updating our collection of photographs of our boarding and daycare clients at play. These are the photos that are displayed in the store. As Don completes a batch of photos he will be posting them in the photo section of our FaceBook page (www.facebook.com/GreenAcresKennelShop). So far, he's completed two playgroups which you can find at:  http://on.fb.me/AhIp2p and http://on.fb.me/wrJOMk).

If you don't see your pet in this batch, don't despair. This is a lengthy process and Don will be taking pictures throughout the year. It depends on many factors; his availability, lighting conditions, and the weather. If you like the Green Acres page on FaceBook, you'll automatically be notified when he uploads a new batch.

Featured Dog Food - Eagle Pack Original & Natural

While Supplies Last - Bonus Bags!

Eagle Original PorkEagle Pack's original formulas are great premium foods at a great price point. We've been selling Eagle since 1998 and have seen countless dogs thrive on these two formulas. Both have meat as a first ingredient and use whole grains rather than grain fragments. In the past year there have been more and more companies advertising that they are now adding beneficial probiotics to their brand. You haven't heard that from Eagle because they've been adding this important ingredient since before 1998! While they may not be a brand that is heavily advertised, they continue to manufacturer an innovative premium food at a very reasonable cost.

While supplies last we have 36lbs bonus bags of both of these formulas in stock. That's six additional pounds for the same price as the 30lbs bag. Pick one up today!

Featured Products - Kong Wobbler

Kong WobblerThe Wobbler is a KONG-shaped food dispensing toy and feeder that sits upright until pushed with a  dog's paw or nose, then dispenses treats or kibble as it wobbles, spins and rolls. The unpredictable movement keeps the toy challenging, even for seasoned Wobbler users. Use the Wobbler as an alternative to a dog bowl, and help to extend meal time and exercise your dog. The Wobbler is made of FDA food-approved, high-strength, plastic polymer and is Dishwasher safe. The top screws off from bottom for easy filling. The Wobbler comes in two sizes: Small (fits 1/2 cup of food), Large (fits 2 cup of food).

Featured Service - Sea Jerky for Dogs

With its 1200 mg of sea cucumber (trademarked as Sea Chondroitin®), and 280 mg of glucosamine HCL, Sea Jerky is an all natural, Maine made, jerky treat for dogs that helps with joint mobility. Debunking Pet Food Myths

MYTH: Pets Should NEVER Get “People” Food

Notice I have the word people in quotes. Who decided that fresh, whole food was “people” food and that our pets should only be fed highly processed, fragmented, non-fresh food? Feeding your pet fresh, whole foods is probably one of the best things you can do for them. It will not upset the delicate balance of their diets as long as you take the time to educate yourself about which fresh foods are appropriate for your pet, what quantities are sufficient and which foods may be dangerous. Nor will it cause them to steal food or beg at the table, as it is how the food is delivered that causes this behavior.

Links Web Design

links-logo-7-25-2011Whether a business is small or large, having a website is becoming increasingly important. At the same time more and more people and companies, some of them of questionable repute, are contacting businesses to help them create their web presence.

When Green Acres decided to redesign our website in 2010, I knew we wanted to work with a local company with a reputation for providing quality work at a fair price. That's why we chose Ken and Kristy Kimball of Links (http://www.linksadvantage.com/ ) to host, redesign and maintain our website.

Links guided us through the process of redesigning our website for ease of use and maximum impact, because what good is a website if it doesn't bring you clients? They have also optimized our site so that search engines like Google find it and list us in a preferred position. We update our website frequently and Links maintenance agreement includes those changes.

If you are considering a website, whether small or large, you owe it to yourself to talk to Ken and Kristy Kimball at Links.

Elite Auto (The Shell on Hammond Street)

We all need gas and there are certainly many places we can fill our vehicles. Paula and I choose to get our gas at Elite Auto, the Shell station at 462 Hammond Street. The price is right and the service is superb. How many gas vendors do you know that still qualify as a service station? Elite Auto does! I really appreciate that they wash my windows as they fill my car, even when the weather is less than nice.  If you have a Green Acres calendar, make sure to use the Elite Auto coupon on the back.

An interesting article in the March 2012 Wired (The Forgetting Pill Erases Painful Memories Forever - Jonah Lehrer) discusses traumatic memories, how they are formed and recalled and how they can be erased. Some quotes to whet your appetite: "...every time we think about the past we are delicately transforming its cellular representation in the brain, changing its underlying neural circuitry." "...memory is less like a movie, a permanent emulsion of chemicals on celluloid, and more like a play-subtly different each time it's performed." "When we experience a traumatic event, it gets remembered in two separate ways. The first memory is the event itself, that cinematic scene we can replay at will. The second memory, however, consists entirely of the emotion, the negative feelings triggered by what happened." - http://bit.ly/zQ3NWV

Product Safety Alert - Nylabone Dura Chew

We have a new product from Nylabone which is causing us some concern. It's called the Nylabone Dura Chew and it consists of a shaped piece of nylon (see photos) with little red bumps on the surface (see below). It is labeled for "Powerful Chewers" but we have had clients return them because their dogs were easily able to break this toy apart. Inside are small plastic parts which could be ingested. While the company has not recalled this product we have removed it from our shelves. If you purchased this product from Green Acres we encourage you to bring it back for a full refund.

Featured Food - Solid Gold

solidgoldlogo-smSolid Gold, established in 1974, was one of the first companies in the United States to use natural ingredients in their pet foods. The company takes a holistic approach to health care and thus considers every part of your pet when designing a nutritious diet. To maintain optimum health, every one of the pet's internal systems needs to be functioning properly. When proper nutrition is not met, one or more of these systems is compromised, resulting in an unhealthy, unhappy animal. For this reason, Solid Gold has developed "non-allergenic" foods which boost the immune system and protect your pet from disease.

Featured Products - Dental Health

February is National Pet Dental Health Month so we are featuring three of our favorite products that can be used to help keep your pet’s teeth clean and healthy.

Wysong DentaTreat™

dentatreatPaula and I have been using DentaTreat™ with our pets since it first came out several years ago. We will be the first to admit that we are not very diligent about brushing our pet's teeth. It's a difficult habitat to establish and so easy to break. That's what makes DentaTreat perfect for people like us - you just sprinkle it on the pet's food at every meal and... Voila! The dental-active natural cheeses, minerals, and apple polyphenols in DentaTreat go to work, keeping their mouths clean and healthy. Yeah, we know... that sounds way to good to be true, but the fact is when we use DentaTreat with the fur kids it has greatly reduced our need for cleanings at the veterinarians. If you want all of the technical details, you can read more at - http://bit.ly/yxM1Oj

Toothbrushes and Toothpaste

Using a toothbrush and toothpaste specifically designed for pets is probably the most common form of pet dental care. Green Acres carries both products in stock.

Raw Bones

There are some folks that feed their pet a diet of raw food or at least use raw bones as a way of keeping a dog's teeth clean and healthy. Please note that not all veterinarians are comfortable with this practice, iMed~bravobeefknuckle1nor is it a good practice if you have a dog with food guarding issues.  We, however, have routinely fed raw bones over the years and our dogs have loved them and we believe they have contributed to better dental health. Here at Green Acres, we sell Bravo Raw Bones in the store because we feel they offer a superior product to what you might get at the supermarket.  Before feeding raw bones you might want to review this article on the Bravo website - http://bit.ly/wPWkI9

Debunking Pet Food Myths

MYTH: Canned Food Is Unnecessary and Is a Waste of Money

Without hesitation we recommend that all cats be offered a high quality canned diet at least twice a day. Cats depend on their food for getting much of their water. As a result many cats eating only dry food do not consume sufficient water; this may cause potentially fatal health problems with their urinary tract. If you are considering adding canned food to your cats diet, please keep in mind that cats develop their dietary preferences when very young and it may take some time for them to start eating canned food, so be patient and keep trying!Weruva Mack and Jack 3

Canned food is not necessary for a dog, and certainly a good quality canned food is generally more expensive than a dry food, but it may be a good supplement or alternative. Many people who feed raw, use a 95% to 100% meat canned diet when they travel.

Canned food is just like dry pet food; there is a range from very high quality to very low quality products. As a consumer you need to educate yourself about the companies offering canned foods. There are only a few pet food canneries in the USA, so most pet food companies, even the huge ones, contract this work out to others. Two companies that do make their own canned food are Merrick and Evanger’s, which is one of the reasons we highly recommend these canned food lines.

The ingredient list on a can of food is just as critical as it is on a bag of dry food. Look for meat as the first ingredient and recognize that what passes for meat in many of those supermarket canned foods is in fact soy protein.

Pet Health - The Importance of Dental Care for Pets

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) periodontal disease is the most commonly diagnosed problem in dogs and cats, and while 80% of people brush their own teeth every day, most do not do the same for their pets. Periodontal disease is a disease of the gums; it can lead to infections of the mouth. The bacteria causing these infections can spread through the bloodstream and cause life-threatening conditions. Infections from periodontal disease have been linked to diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, kidney disease and other life threatening disorders as well as tooth loss. The AVMA estimates that by age two, 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats have some form of periodontal disease.

Some common signs of dental disease in pets are; bad breath, reluctance to chew or crying out when chewing, increased salivation, red and/or puffy gums, bleeding gums, a buildup of tartar/calculus on the teeth, and missing or loose teeth.

Your veterinarian will typically examine your pet's mouth and teeth during a routine physical exam. This is one reason why a through annual exam is so important for every pet. If necessary, the veterinarian may recommend a dental cleaning. This procedure requires general anesthesia. During the procedure the pet's teeth and gums will be thoroughly examined, scaled and polished. If a problem tooth is found, it may need to be extracted.

The best way to minimize professional cleanings at your veterinarians is to do your best to keep your pet’s teeth clean by home dental care. This can include brushing your pet's teeth (the general rule seems to be at least every 48 hours to be effective) or using special treats and or supplements to help keep teeth clean. There is an urban myth that feeding only dry food will keep your pet’s teeth clean and it is just that - a myth. Cats may also benefit greatly from having canned (wet) food in their diet.

Helping to Reduce the Number of Unwanted Pets
Low Income Spay / Neuter Program

Monday, February 6, 2012 – An estimated 6-8 million homeless animals enter animal shelters throughout the U.S. every year. The Bangor Humane Society alone takes in over 5,000 animals a year. Two-thirds of those animals are cats. That is why the Bangor Humane Society is thrilled to announce that due to the generosity of the Belvedere Animal Welfare Fund of the Maine Community Foundation, and from other generous local foundations, a Spay/Neuter Voucher Program for low-income cat and dog owners opens on February 6, 2012.

This program is available to anyone who receives or is eligible for Food Stamps, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Social Security Disability (SSD), or Maine Care (Medicaid).  Starting on Monday, February 6th, they can call 942-8902 to apply and then, if qualified; receive a voucher that they can use at participating veterinary practices.  For an average co-pay of $20 for male cats and $30 for female cats; $25 for male dogs and $40 for female dog (cost does not include additional fees that may be required by participating veterinarians) their pets can be spayed or neutered and receive a rabies shot.  The low-income spay/ neuter grant funds received by BHS will cover the remaining cost.

“The increased availability of spay/neuter will help to reduce the number of unwanted litters surrendered to animal shelters”, said Suzan Bell, Executive Director of the Bangor Humane Society.

Last year BHS accepted 480 owner-relinquished dogs and 390 stray dogs.  During the same time it accepted 3,032 owner-relinquished cats and 597 stray cats.  Many of the dogs, and most of the cats, would not have arrived at BHS if owners had sterilized their pets.  In fact, many of the cats arrived at BHS pregnant or with a litter of kittens.

The funds available for the BHS program are limited and not expected to last more than a couple of months.  Last year, the BHS spay/neuter funds were able to assist over one hundred applicants, but almost 100 more names were put on a waiting list.

Here are some of the facts about spaying and neutering:

  • One female cat and her offspring can produce over 420,000 cats and kittens in seven years.
  • One female dog and her offspring can produce over 67,000 dogs and puppies in six years.
  • Neutered male dogs and cats are less likely to spray or mark their territory with urine than their unaltered counterparts.  They are also less likely to run away from home in search of a willing mate.
  • A female kitten can get pregnant as early as 4 ½ months of age.
  • It often costs less to have a pet spayed or neutered than to raise a litter of puppies or kittens to eight weeks of age.
  • The Bangor Humane Society spays & neuters all pets before adoption into a new home.

In addition to the grant funding, BHS is also implementing some other spay/neuter programs to help reduce the number of unwanted pets, available to assist those individuals in the community that do not qualify for the voucher program. BHS has contracted with local veterinarians to host a monthly feline spay/neuter clinic at the shelter. The clinic can accommodate a minimum of 40 felines per month and charges $25 per male cat and $50 per female cat. The clinic is cash only. For an additional fee, felines can also receive their rabies shot, flea and ear mite treatment, and nail clipping. Interested individuals can contact BHS for more details. Space is extremely limited and we have a waiting list through March.

Lastly, BHS is launching a new initiative called, “Spay Your Mama” available for female canine owners. If an owner’s female dog has recently had a litter of puppies, the Bangor Humane Society will spay the mom for nominal fee, if the owner surrenders the puppies for adoption. The mom dog will be returned to the original owner for a $50 reclaim fee, while the puppies are spayed or neutered and placed for adoption.

The community need for sustainable spay/neuter programs is vast and ongoing.  “The need is great (and increasing) in our region for low income spay / neuter programs, but the resources available through BHS, the State of Maine Animal Welfare program and other agencies are limited,” says Bell.

Each year the BHS cares for and works to find forever homes for more than 5000 homeless pets.  The Bangor Humane Society is an independent, non-profit organization, funded by local contributions and donations.  Finding safe homes for animals is not just our mission here at the Bangor Humane Society, it’s our tradition, and we thank the community for helping us accomplish this goal each day.

Chapel Hill Floral

I first became acquainted with Chapel Hill Floral (http://www.chapelhillfloral.com) when co-owner Barbara Frye joined my BNI group several years ago. Since that time Paula and I have used Chapel Hill's services for a wide variety of personal and business needs. We've sent flowers, fruit baskets, and even chocolates both locally and throughout the country with the assistance of Barbara, her husband Ricky, and the great staff at Chapel Hill. Time and time again we hear compliments on the beauty of the floral arrangements design and how long the flowers last. Like Green Acres, Chapel Hill is locally owned and they put a great emphasis on superb customer service and continuing education for their staff. We recommend them highly!

Instincts When Making Decisions

A short but insightful article by Gary Marcus on how animals (yes that includes humans) tend to default to our reflexive systems (instincts) when making decisions. Our short-term thinking circuits, necessary for survival, have evolved over hundreds of millions of years to be the default mechanism, especially under stress. Deliberative/rational thinking has really only been developing for a few thousand years. While the article was primarily addressing the question "Why has evolution let drugs be fun?" it could just as easily apply to "why do people/corporations/governments make bad, short-term economic and political decisions or why does my dog bark at strangers and chase cats. - http://bit.ly/yY8U80

REMEMBER TO BOOK EARLY FOR FEBRUARY VACATION!

(February 18th through 26th)

Why Buy at Green Acres?

Big-box stores are different from other kinds of retail businesses. Every $1 spent on retail results in 45 cents circulating through a community, according to the Institute for Local Self-Reliance. But large chain stores put just 13 cents of that $1 spent back through the local economy, according to the organization. – Bangor Daily News February 24, 2011

It has always been our goal to offer, healthy wholesome pet foods and quality pet supplies at fair and consistently competitive prices. We don't lower our prices for a week to lure you in and then raise them the following week once we have you hooked. Unfortunately, many assume that those big box stores that ship most of their profits out of the area will always beat us on price. The fact is we have a great selection of items and as illustrated below our prices our substantially lower. Check us out and help keep your hard earned dollars in your community and support your neighbors!

Featured Food

b.f.f.

This month we are introducing b.f.f. (best feline friend) an all natural, grain free, tuna based canned food made in a human food facility by the same makers of Weruva pet foods. Available in 8 recipes and three sizes 3 oz, 5.5 oz and 10 oz cans, our experience has been that cats find this food simply irresistible! An added bonus to the Skipjack Tuna is that since it resides closer to the surface and is smaller in size there is not the same concern for the fish being laden with toxins and heavy metals.bff-leader

Frequent Buyer Programs

Did you know that you can save even more when you take advantage of one of our frequent buyer programs from the following food manufacturers?

NutriSource/Pure Vita/Natural Planet Organics – Buy any products in the NutriSource family and you will get a free product, after buying twelve. NutriSource allows you to move around between formulas and brands, but does limit the free product to being the one of lowest value. Since we keep track of all of this in the store, the reward is immediate.

Natura (California Natural/Evo/Innova) – Natura’s program works the same as NutriSource’s, but you get free product after purchasing 10 items. There is an added step of our clipping the barcode off the product at time of purchase and sending the 10 barcodes to Natura, who will then send a coupon to you.

Steve's Real Food for Pets - Steve's is our most popular line of frozen, raw food for cats and dogs. We keep a card on file where we record each of your purchases. After you have purchased 12 bags, you get the 13th free.

FREE SEMINARS

Optimal Nutrition for Pets – January 26th

On Thursday, January 26th at 6:30PM Green Acres Kennel Shop will be hosting a free seminar that will focus on optimal nutrition for pets. Don Hanson, BFRAP, CDBC, CPDT-KA and co-owner of Green Acres Kennel Shop will discuss common myths about pet food and how to choose the best pet food for your pet. He will help pet parents differentiate between the important information on a bag of pet food and the hype. Don will also demonstrate how to calculate the true cost of a pet food.

The seminar is free but we will enthusiastically accept any donations, cash or pet food, for the Eastern Area Agency on Aging Furry Friends Food Bank. Call us at 945-6841 to reserve your spot.

Canine Body Language – February 23rd

Just like our dogs are not born understanding English, we are not born understanding dog. If we want to have the best relationship with our dog we need to learn their language. On Thursday evening, February 23rd at 6:30PM, Certified Professional Dog Trainer, Kate Dutra, will help you to become more aware of what your dog is communicating to you and others through the use of its body. She will also discuss what your body is saying to your dog and will describe how you can use your body for more effective management and training. This seminar is for anyone who has a dog in their life and the information presented will be applicable to a variety of interactions with humans as well as other animals. Limited seats our available, so call us at 945-6841 to reserve your spot today.

Debunking Pet Food Myths

MYTH: The Best Value Is the Food That Costs the Least Per Pound

Everyone wants to get a good value for their hard earned money, unfortunately, many people fall into the trap of incorrectly assuming that the pet food with the lowest cost per pound is the best value. Some stores even support this myth by putting labels on the shelf, which clearly state the cost per pound. While this is a great tool when comparing apples to apples so to speak; pet food is more complex than just price per pound.

Feeding Amount_50lbs_dog-PedigreeFeeding Amount_50lbs_dog-InnovaPet food manufacturers use different ingredients in different amounts to formulate their products. Some use high quality ingredients which are also more expensive. Because these high quality ingredients contain more nutrition per pound, you can feed your pet less.

In the photos above I’ve illustrated the amount of Pedigree and the amount of Innova that each bag recommends be fed to a 50 pound dog. As you can see, at 2 cups for Innova, you would be feeding half as much food as the Pedigree that requires 4 cups of food. The ingredients that go in the food make a huge difference.

In order to determine the true cost of a pet food you need to know two things; 1) the amount of food you need to feed your pet in volumetric ounces or cups, and 2) the food density of the food, or how much one volumetric cup of the food weighs. You can then use this information to determine the number of days a bag of food will last, which allows you to determine the daily feeding cost. While regulations require pet food manufacturers provide you with information on how much to feed your pet, they are not required to indicate the food density of their food. As a result most companies do not put this valuable piece of information on the label, and some will not even release it if you call and ask, making it impossible to determine the true cost of their product. In our estimation, their failure to disclose that information is enough to discourage us from feeding or recommending their food.

In an effort to help our clients evaluate different food for budgetary reasons, we work to obtain this information and do the necessary calculations so that you can see exactly how much a given food will cost to feed a fifty pound dog on a daily basis.

Bangor Center for Dental Medicine - Dr. John Hauge

We started seeing Dr. Hague at the Bangor Center for Dental Medicine last year after meeting him and his wife Donna at a meeting of the Paul Bunyan Chapter of BNI. I needed a second opinion on a damaged crown and Paula needed a second opinion on a root canal - stat!  We both have been extremely impressed by the technical expertise, excellent medical care and the warm, friendly atmosphere from everyone on Dr. Hauge's staff. Paula's pain was relieved in short order.

When I first sat in the chair to have my crown redone Dr. Hauge indicated that it should be a painless procedure. Being needle-phobic all of my life, I explained that the Novocain part of dental work had always been had my biggest fear and had never been pain free for me. He explained that it can and should be as long as the practitioner takes their time. I then had my first pain-free Novocain injection. Today I had my first ultrasonic cleaning by Robin - another pain-free and wonderful procedure. While many people dread going to the dentist. Dr. Hauge, his wife Donna and the rest of the staff now make dental care something I can look forward to.

Green Acres Announces Participation in
APDT Train Your Dog Month

apdt logo_prof_medGreen Acres Kennel Shop and The Woof Meow Show are proud to be supporters of the Association of Pet Dog Trainer's* (APDT) 3rd annual National Train Your Dog Month. The APDT has designated January as National Train Your Dog Month to bring awareness to the importance of socialization and training for all dogs! January was selected as the perfect month because so many animals are adopted and brought home during the winter holidays.

Each year hundreds of thousands of dogs are surrendered to shelters and rescue organizations for behavioral reasons; sadly many of these dogs are often euthanized. What is even more regrettable is that many of these problems may never have occurred had the dogs been properly trained and socialized, and had the pet parents been properly educated in a basic understanding of canine behavior, needs andRecall color_copy_200x181 communication.

Like the APDT, Green Acres believes that a better understanding of our pets’ behavior can lead to happier, healthier and more harmonious households for humans and companion animals. Green Acres offers a wide variety of dog training classes starting in January.  We have classes for puppies as young as 8 weeks of age (Puppy Headstart), young adolescents 16 weeks of age and older (Basic Manners) as well as several level two and level three classes for dogs and their humans that are ready for more advanced work.  You can find more information on Green Acres training program at: http://www.greenacreskennel.com/training

Green Acres' The Woof Meow Show, aired on WVOM, 103.9 FM and WVQM 101.3 FM every Saturday morning at 7:30AM and every Sunday evening at 8:30PM, will feature training shows throughout the month of January. On December 31st Kate and Don will interview the APDT's Executive Director, Mychelle Blake, and will discuss all of the resources the APDT makes available to pet parents at their website (http://www.trainyourdogmonth.com) and FaceBook page (www.facebook.com/NationalTrainYourDogMonth). For the remaining three weeks Kate and Don will discuss typical training issues people face with a new dog; January 7th -Housetraining, January 14th -Play Biting & Chewing, and January 21st -Attention, Leave It and Take It. Handouts on these topics will be available at the Green Acres website (www.greenacreskennel.com) in the Information-Articles and Blog-What's New sections. A complete schedule for The Woof Meow Show can be found at: http://www.greenacreskennel.com/woof-meow-show/the-woof-meow-show.

Sensible Harness

In recognition of Train Your Dog Month, we are featuring one of our favorite training tools - the Sensible Harness.  Teaching a dog to walk nicely on a leash takes time, yet we still need to walk the dog before they've mastered this behavior and want to be able to do so without getting our arm jerked out of our shoulder. This front-connect harness uses the simple mechanics of physics to help you keep your dog from pulling. We have had hundreds of clients purchase these harnesses over the years and they love them.

Debunking Pet Food Myths

MYTH: If the Bag Says “Natural” It’s Natural and Is Therefore “Good”

Beneful -_bag-cropped_-smlOver the past several years food companies, pet and human alike, have been emphasizing the importance of feeding natural foods. Unfortunately the word “Natural” has no legal definition for pet food so it can be misleading. Pet food companies not only use the word “Natural” on their bags but they also use photographs and illustrations on the bag and in their advertising to create an illusion that the bag is filled with natural, fresh, whole food like beef and vegetables. For example a "natural" pet food found in most supermarkets is illustrated to the left.

If we look at the ingredients panel for this food (see below) to determine what is actually in this bag of food we can see that beef is the seventh item on the list and dried peas and carrots are number twenty and twenty-one; after sugar, water (this is a dry food), salt and various other ingredients. Obviously it is highly unlikely this bag of food contains very many peas or carrots. Also notice that the main source of meat is chicken by-product meal (the second ingredient) yet the main labeling on the bag touts this as a beef based dog food. The artificial colors highlighted in green are clearly not “natural” ingredients.
