AHA Charges The Dog Whisperer (Cesar Millan) Is Inhumane

In a press release dated September 6th, 2006, Randy Blauvelt of the American Humane Association (AHA) states that the training approach used by TV personality Cesar Millan (The Dog Whisperer) is more harmful than helpful and is often inhumane. American Humane is the oldest organization in the US dedicated to protecting children and animals. In a letter to the National Geographic Channel, the channel where The Dog Whisperer is telecast, AHA states that "The training tactics featured on Cesar Millan's 'Dog Whisperer' program are inhumane, outdated, and improper. " They outline several instances of cruel and dangerous treatment promoted on the popular show by Millan as acceptable training methods. They describe one incident they have documented where a dog was partially asphyxiated when Millan "hung" the dog. They also cite an incident where Millan was attempting to change a dogs behavior by causing pain with an electric shock collar. The AHA letter calls for National Geographic channel to stop airing The Dog Whisperer immediately and to issue a statement explaining that the methods used on the show are inhumane.
