Boarding

What is Pet Friendly?

GAKS-Best Kennel-2012 300x300While there are many decent boarding facilities that truly love the animals they care for, we believe it is important that pet guardians realize not all people in the pet care business are "pet friendly." In some cases the abuse does not stem from ill will, rather it is simply a matter of a lack of education about dogs and cats. Regardless of the reasons however, the outcome for the animal is a negative one. The following are a few examples of what we consider to be unacceptable and unethical behavior on the part of some people in the pet care business.

Recently an article was printed in The Whole Dog Journal where a pet guardian was astonished to find that the daycare where she had been taking her dog for six months was using an electric shock collar on her dog. Sadly, this lady's previously well adjusted dog is now very fearful of other dogs. Fortunately she has now found a "pet friendly" daycare, but the damage to her dog has been done. And if you think this could never happen in Maine, it has.

A few years ago we had a client who needed to board their dog and we were filled to capacity. They ended up boarding their dog at another facility. Their dog, which was always anxious in new situations, started stress barking shortly after they left. Without the client's permission, someone at that kennel put a bark collar on their dog which gave her an electric shock on her throat every time she barked. Obviously, this made her even more anxious and started a vicious cycle of a bark followed by the pain of a shock. This facility told the client what they had done when they picked up the dog, but failed to see the grave error they had made.

Recently there have been several messages on an email list for those in the kennel industry. List participants are kennel owners or managers. One person posted a message asking how others deal with dogs that bark while at the kennel. She was frustrated that a particular dog kept barking day and night and that it was "annoying her".

Some of the suggestions other kennel owners and managers offered were frightening! One suggested she squirt the dog with water whenever it barked. Another indicated that they routinely put bark collars on dogs when they stay at their facility (these collars give the dog an electric shock on the throat when it barks). A further suggestion was to muzzle the dog to keep it quiet. All of the suggestions she had been given involving punishing the dog were likely to make the dog more stressed and had great potential to make the dog fearful and aggressive. Don Hanson, co-owner of Green Acres, told her our approach to barking, which is as follows:

Barking here at Green Acres is dealt with in the following fashion; 1) we understand that barking is part of the business and if you're in the business you need to accept that, and 2) barking is a very complex behavior and dogs bark for many reasons; to address it, you must first understand the cause of it.

In a kennel situation continuous barking is probably due to stress or boredom. This can be alleviated by putting the dog in another run where it might feel more secure, putting a crate in the run with the dog, giving them extra exercise, providing them with a stuffed Kong, or using a stress reliever like a Dog Appeasing Pheromone diffuser or Bach Rescue Remedy. The goal is to ease the stress, not add to it through the use of punishment.

If the reason a dog is barking is the presence of other dogs, the remedy is very simple - move them to a different location where they have less visual contact with other dogs. We have some dogs that do board with us that are very reactive to other dogs and we simply plan ahead and have them board in specific kennels so that they rarely have to see others pass by. Not only does this decrease the barking, but it helps to decrease stress for the animals.

And of course there are always those that simply are a bit more talkative and bark out of joy when they see staff. For this crew we simply smile and hold a conversation with them. A little conversation can go a long way. We may not know the exact words behind the bark, but we can still share the language.

As a "Pet Friendly" facility Green Acres pledges that we will NEVER intentionally do anything that will cause your best friend any sort of physical, mental or emotional trauma. If your pet is stressed we will tell you, and while in our care will do everything we can to reduce or alleviate that stress, not contribute to it.

Dog Boarding

DogBoard-1

Dogs boarding at Green Acres stay in one of our four heated rooms. Each dog is assigned their own spacious indoor-outdoor kennel. Kennels are available in small, medium, large and giant sizes. Run dimensions vary from 2.5x4 to 3.5 by 6 inside and 2.5x12 to 3.5x16 outside. Your dog will be assigned to a run and room that is appropriate for their size and temperament.

Each individual kennel has an indoor and outdoor section. Each inside run is separated by a solid wall to provide privacy for the dogs. A sliding door between the indoor and outdoor section of the kennel allows the dogs to come and go as they please. During the winter heating season we do not keep this door open, due to heat loss, but do allow the dogs several opportunities to go outside throughout the day. Both sides of the runs are cleaned daily or more frequently if needed. We will allow dogs that normally live together and that can be fed next to one another to share a run, providing there is ample room for them to move freely.

We offer a wide-range of room service options for our doggy guests, ranging from social activities like playtime to special treats and grooming. Activity is important, so most clients opt for playtime for their pet. We encourage you to checkout all of our room service options.

Snuggle Time – Extra special time with your dog and one of our staff... just for snuggling, nuzzling, massaging and petting. Individual Play – Outdoor play for your dog with one of our staff. This service is recommended for those dogs that enjoy cavorting outside; fetching the ball or frisbee, but prefer the company of a person rather than other dogs. Playtime

Play-6

DOGS

Playtime is something that all dogs love and a daily playtime is included as part of our standard boarding rate. Additional playtimes are optional. Our trained, experienced staff will assign your dog to a playgroup based on temperament, size, age and play style for a fun romp with up to four other dogs. Playtime sessions take place in one of our two outside, fenced, play yards. All play sessions are 100% supervised by a trained pet care technician and there are never more than 5 dogs per technician; your dog will never be left unsupervised with dogs that are not part of its family. If your dog is not comfortable with other dogs, individual playtime is available. Individual playtimes may consist of wandering and smelling the scents of the world, running and fetching, just hanging out, or sitting on a lap and being pampered.

Group playtimes last approximately 20 minutes and individual playtimes are approximately 10 minutes in length.

CATS

Playtime for cats is done on an individual basis only and includes whatever activities your cat prefers. Activities can range from chasing a cat charmer, to playing fetch (yes, there are cats that fetch!), to snuggling and being petted, or any combination of these – we let the cat decide!

If you elect to have your pets participate in Playtime, you will need to sign a Playtime Contract.

Boarding Requirements

Vaccinations

To ensure the health of all pets staying at Green Acres, we will need to see proof of vaccination for rabies for all cats and dogs, and either proof of vaccination or proof of immunity for distemper and canine cough for your dog and proof of vaccination or immunity for distemper for your cat. Proof of immunity would require a letter from your veterinarian stating that titer tests are performed on a routine basis and that your pet has sufficient immunity.  In an effort to make the check in process more efficient and to prevent any delays in your travel plans, a day or two prior to your pet’s arrival we will attempt to obtain this information from your veterinarian. Please note however, that not all veterinarians will release this information so be sure to have it available should it be needed.

Fleas

All pets entering Green Acres are checked for fleas and must be flea free before they may be boarded. All pets are checked for fleas daily to ensure that no guest goes home with fleas. If your pet is found to have fleas at the time of check in, they will need to have a flea bath and Capstar® prior to being admitted to the kennel, for which there will be an extra charge.

Emergency Veterinary Care

If your pet should require veterinary care while staying with us, we will work with your veterinarian and the local Emergency Veterinary Clinic to provide the required care. Whenever possible, we will contact you or the person you designate at the emergency number you leave us, if such care should be required. Veterinary care is provided under the terms of Green Acres’ general contract.

Boarding Questions

Why is boarding such a good option for pets?

When traveling, people often go places where pets are not allowed such as restaurants, museums and other attractions. For the pet, this means staying behind in an unfamiliar environment or being left in the car, particularly perilous in the warmer months and climates. Traveling with a pet has the additional risks of the pet getting scared and running off, or becoming sick. Changes are usually very stressful to a pet, especially cats, and traveling is a constantly changing situation. Boarding facilities provide a safe, caring environment with a staff trained to care for your pet and monitor their health while keeping them secure. A quality boarding facility gives a pet's guardian peace of mind, knowing that their pets are safe and comfortable.

Why is it not a good idea to leave the pets with friends or family members?

Actually that can be an option if the person you choose is well trained in caring for pets, is around a significant portion of the day and during the nighttime hours, and if your pet gets along well with pets that the other person may have. It is a big responsibility to take care of another person’s pet and can be inconvenient if the pet gets ill or runs away while in their care. Few yards and homes are as secure as a good boarding facility.

What if the pet doesn't do well being boarded?

Although this happens rarely, it is a possibility, and when it does occur any reputable boarding facility will make you aware of your pet's unhappiness and distress and will suggest other options. In these cases we always recommend the pet stay at home and that you hire a well qualified pet/house sitter who will stay at your home and watch over both your pet and home. When you go this route, always make sure the pet sitter is well qualified and your pet is familiar with them; they need to have the same level of knowledge of animal behavior and healthcare as any employee at a boarding facility. Additionally, make sure they have a backup plan in case they become ill or have an accident while caring for your pet.

What do we need to bring with us when we board our pet?

There are several things you should bring with you when boarding your pet.

  1. If it is your pet’s first visit, bring proof of vaccinations. All dogs boarding at Green Acres must have current vaccinations for Rabies, Distemper, and Canine Cough/Bordetella. All cats must have current vaccinations for Rabies and Distemper and we encourage vaccination for Feline Leukemia.
  2. An emergency phone number where we can contact you or someone else if the facility has any question regarding your pet or your pet requires emergency care. If you leave a third party as your emergency contact, please be sure that they are aware that you have done so, that they are familiar with your pet and that they are willing and able to make decisions on your behalf.
  3. Any medications, prescription or otherwise (e.g. Aspirin), that your pet requires. All medications should be in containers clearly marked with your pet’s name, the name of the medication, the correct dosage for your pet, and if a prescription, the name of the veterinarian. Please bring sufficient medications to cover the duration of your pet’s stay as well as a couple of extra days should your return be delayed.
  4. If your pet requires food other than what we provide in the kennel, you should bring enough food for their stay. Green Acres feeds NutriSource food. If you wish your pet to be fed something other than what we provide you may bring your own food or purchase any of the food we sell at Green Acres. Any food you bring should be clearly labeled with your pet’s name and the amount they are to receive at each feeding.
  5. If your pet will be picked up by someone other than yourself, please leave us with the name and phone number of the person(s) authorized to pick up your pet.  No pet will be released until your account is settled.

Can I bring my pet’s toys and bed?

Yes, you may bring your pet’s toys; however, when possible they should be clearly labeled with your pet’s name. We also request you limit the number to one or two. If you do not wish to bring your pet’s toys, we will provide them with toys that we maintain in the kennel. Please review our belonging’s policy.

For cleaning and sanitation purposes, bedding and blankets from home are not permitted. Green Acres has a large supply of bedding for our boarding guests, and please be assured that your pet will rest comfortably.

How do I know my pet won't get fleas while boarding?

While we cannot guarantee with 100% certainty that an animal will not get fleas while boarding, here at Green Acres we make every effort to be proactive and prevent this from happening. Each pet that boards at Green Acres is checked for fleas when they check-in. Any pet found to have fleas or flea dirt must have a flea bath and Capstar® before being admitted to the kennel. Capstar® is an extremely effective and pet safe product that is used to eliminate live adult fleas on a pet. For more information on Capstar® please see http://www.capstar.novartis.us/. There is an additional charge for a flea bath and Capstar®. Each pet is then checked daily to make sure they do not pick up any fleas during their stay. If fleas, or evidence of fleas are observed, the animal will then receive a flea bath and Capstar® during their stay.

In 1997 we observed that many of our clients started to use some of the new flea control products available from their veterinarian (FrontLine® and Advantix®). These products work very well and we encourage you to discuss them at your next veterinary visit.

How often will my pet get exercise?

During the warmer months the dogs are allowed free access to their indoor and outdoor runs from 7:00 AM until 7:00 PM. When we are heating the kennel, the dogs are allowed to use their outside runs several times during the day. The duration of this time is dependent on the weather. The cats have runs filled with climbing posts and toys to keep them occupied. We also have a large cat playroom which we rotate the cats through during their stay.

We encourage you to take advantage of our optional playtime programs if your dog or cat will be staying with us for more than 2 or 3 days. The dogs and cats really enjoy this extra interaction.

What do my pets do during playtime?

We try to customize our playtimes to the activities that your pet enjoys, whether it be simply walking around and smelling the world, playing fetch, playing with other dogs, or sitting on a lap and getting petted and brushed. Dog playtimes may be conducted inside or outside. We will allow dogs to play with other dogs when requested by both clients, providing the dogs get along. Cat playtimes are conducted in one of the cat playrooms by a staff member who will play with your cat using interactive toys and spend some time just snuggling.

Can I have friends and family come and visit my pet while they stay at the kennel?

We do allow friends and family to visit providing you have given us their names and permission to visit. For insurance purposes, visitors are not permitted to visit in the kennel area and will need to take the pet out either to the front fenced yard or off the premises for a visit. Please note that once your pet leaves the kennel building it becomes the sole responsibility of your friend/family member until returned to Green Acres.

It is also important to note that some animals actually do better without visits, as they have an opportunity to adapt and remain in the kennel environment rather than have to continually adjust to ever changing settings.

How do you charge for my pet’s boarding?

We charge for boarding like a hotel charges for a room. You are charged for the day your pet is dropped off and for every subsequent day your pet is here after our 12 noon checkout time. Pets groomed on the last day of their stay are not charged for boarding that day (except Sundays and holidays).

How early should we make reservations and what is your policy on cancellations?

While we wish we could accommodate all of you that want to board your pets with us during major holidays, we only have a set number of kennels. To ensure you get a reservation when you need it, we encourage you to book as soon as possible. Reservations for major holidays and school breaks such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, February Vacation, and Spring Vacation generally need to be made 4 to 8 weeks in advance. Reservations for any summer weekend generally need to be made 2 to 4 weeks in advance.

Boarding is a seasonal business and we need to optimize our run usage during peak times. Some kennels do this by overbooking and then placing "extra pets" in crates. We do not believe in this practice because we do not feel it is fair to your pets or to you. Once we are full we maintain a waiting list. As we get cancellations, we call people on the waiting list to offer them the space and dates they have requested.

In order for this system to work, it requires that people cancel reservations in a timely manner. It is our policy that reservations must be canceled at least 72 hours in advance, or you will be billed for the dates and runs you reserved. This amount of time is necessary in order to fill the run that has been reserved. Thank you for all of your understanding and cooperation.

What Can I Bring With My Pet for Boarding/Daycare

Thank you for your interest in Green Acres Kennel Shop, your pet’s home away from home. Whether you have already made your boarding reservation or are considering us for the future we would like to thank you for taking the time to review the belonging’s policy for animals staying with us.

Please know that with the exception of medications or any special diets, it is not necessary for you to bring items from home unless you choose to do so. We will provide your pet with bedding, NutriSource pet food, treats and toys (should they desire) while they are with us. If however you wish to bring some personal items, with the exception of bedding, the following are some guidelines that we respectfully request you adhere to. (For cleaning purposes, we ask that you please do not bring any bedding. We will provide all pets with bedding for the duration of their stay with us.)

For pets coming for just one night:

  • Bedding – Green Acres will provide all of the necessary bedding for your pet. We have a variety of different styles of beds to accommodate the different needs of our guests.
  • Toys - Please do not bring any toys as we will provide these for your pet. It is kennel policy to collect and clean all belongings the day before an animal is scheduled to check out so for that one evening they will receive kennel supplies anyway.
  • Chewies – Bones, Bully Sticks, Rawhides, Greenies, etc. are welcome but please limit them to no more than one per day. As these are consumables, there is a high probability that they will not be returned. For your convenience, we also offer many of these items on our Room Service Menu [Cat - Room Service] [Dog Room Service].
  • Medication - Should your pet require medication during its stay, it must be in a container labeled with your pet’s name, your name, the type of medication, the dosage and the prescribing veterinarian.
  • Food - Food is included with Boarding so it is not necessary to supply your own food unless you wish to do so or your dog is on a special diet. Please limit the amount you bring to what is required for your pet’s stay. Food should be in a container labeled with your pet’s name, your last name, the type of food and the feeding instructions.
  • Clothing - In inclement weather, please feel free to bring sweaters and booties for play outdoors.

For pets staying for more than one night:

  • Bedding – Green Acres will provide all of the necessary bedding for your pet. We have a variety of different styles of beds to accommodate the different needs of our guests.
  • Toys - You are welcome to bring your pet’s favorite toys while it is with us, but we respectfully request that you limit the number of toys to two. It is kennel policy to collect and clean all belongings the day before an animal is scheduled to check out so for their last evening they will receive kennel supplies.
Please bring enough medication for your pet’s stay and a few extra days should you be delayed on your return.
  • Food & Treats - Food is included with Boarding so it is not necessary to supply your own food unless you wish to do so or your dog is on a special diet. Please limit the amount you bring to what is required for your pet’s stay. Food should be in a container labeled with your pet’s name, your last name, the type of food and the feeding instructions. We provide treats for pets staying with us, but should you elect to bring your own you are welcome to do so. We ask that you limit the amount to a reasonable quantity for your pet’s stay.
  • Clothing - In inclement weather, please feel free to bring sweaters and booties for play outdoors.

As always, feel free to contact us if you have any questions regarding your pet’s boarding. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you and your pet soon.
