Shared Blog Post – New Canine Vaccine Rules Rolled Out – Can You Guess What They Now Endorse? by Karen Becker, DVM

In this article from December 20th, veterinarian Karen Becker discusses the 2017 Canine Vaccination Guidelines released by the American Animal Hospital Association. I have recently posted articles on this same topic by Dr. Nancy Kay and Dr. Jean Dodds.

Dr. Becker notes that the significant changes in this AAHA document are:

  • There are no notable changes to core vaccine recommendations (distemper, parvo, adenovirus and rabies), except that the parainfluenza virus is now considered an optional core according to the AAHA
  • As always, my (Dr. Becker’s) canine vaccine protocol differs from the AAHA guidelines, especially with regard to non-core vaccines
  • For the first time, the AAHA acknowledges that titer tests are useful in determining dogs’ immunity to distemper, parvo and adenovirus

Dr. Becker, Dr. Kay, and Dr. Dodds all recommend titer testing. It is something we have done with our dogs for many years. An argument some use against titer testing is its cost. In her article, Dr. Becker discusses a program through Kansas State University which can make titer testing more economical for both you and your veterinarian. You can read more about that at – http://www.protectthepets.com/uploads/1/0/8/0/108023613/for_your_veterinarianksdl_detailed_instructions.pdf

You can read Dr. Becker’s entire article and her recommended vaccine protocol at – https://healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/archive/2017/12/20/canine-vaccine-guidelines.aspx?

Green Acres Kennel Shop accepts titer tests when recommended by your veterinarian as a safer and healthier alternative to revaccination.

Shared Blog Post – Like an Expanding Balloon in Your Pet’s Tummy, This Can Kill in Only Hours

An article discussing bloat or gastric dilatation volvulus (GDV) by veterinarian Dr. Karen Becker. A new study indicates that the vast majority of dogs who undergo surgery for GDV survive. The study also indicates that the dogs most likely to develop GDV are purebred and weigh over 88 pounds. The Great Dane, Akita, Dogue de Bordeaux, Irish Setter and Weimaraner are the breeds that have the greatest risk of developing GDV. The article also indicates “Dogs fed primarily dry diets are at significantly increased risk for GDV” – https://healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/archive/2017/11/01/gastric-dilatation-volvulus-surgery.aspx

Shared Blog Post – Dogs and Cats Are Dying Daily Because Their Owners Aren’t Aware of This

An excellent article by veterinarian Dr. Karen Becker address pet obesity and pet nutrition. Key points addressed are:

  • The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention’s (APOP) 2016 clinical survey recently reported that nearly 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats are clinically overweight or obese
  • Several related diseases and conditions may occur when cats and dogs are overweight or obese, including inflammation, diabetes, heart conditions and metabolic and endocrine disorders, not to mention strain placed on their bones, joints, and organs
  • The survey was an indication of the disparity between pet owners’ ideas of how pets should be fed (and how much) and veterinarians who repeat the same uninformed opinions they’ve had regarding pet nutrition for years

Shared Blog Post – If a Dog Fails This Test, He Won’t Make a Good Service Dog

I receive many calls from people that want to make their dog into a service or assistance dog, or that want to purchase or adopt a dog that they have selected and make it into a service dog. What these people do not realize is that while most dogs can be great pets, very few have what it takes to become a service dog. Even service dog agencies that have breeding programs to select the qualities that they believe will make a good service dog and up having a large number of dogs, as many as 70 percent, that do not graduate due to behavioral problems.

In her blog post, Dr. Becker discusses a recent study that may help service dog organizations evaluate dogs earlier in the process. “These study results suggest fMRI scans can improve the ability to identify dogs who are not good service training candidates to 67 percent, up from about 47 percent without the use of fMRI. “What the brain imaging tells us is not just which dogs are more likely to fail, but why,” says Berns.”

Sadly, more and more people are committing fraud and claiming there dog is a service dog when in reality they are not. It takes much more than a letter from a doctor or mental health professional to make a dog a service dog. Typically a real service dog will have between 12 and 24 months of training, by professionals at a service dog organization, before the dog is every placed with the person they are meant to help. – https://iheartdogs.com/10-signs-that-a-service-dog-is-actually-a-fake/

Shared Blog Post – FDA on a Witch Hunt Against Commercial Pet Food? A Little Spritz of This Makes Pet Food Far Safer

FDA on a Witch Hunt Against Commercial Pet Food? A Little Spritz of This Makes Pet Food Far Safer – Dr. Karen Becker, a veterinarian, and raw food proponent, discusses a study which demonstrates the efficacy of using bacteriophages to reduce the presence of salmonella, listeria and E. coli in raw pet food. These products have been approved by the FDA for use on human food. “Unlike other methods used to kill pathogens, for example, irradiation, pressurization or chlorine washes, bacteriophages don’t affect the color, taste, texture or odor of ingredients. It’s a 100 percent natural approach to killing bacteria in raw food.” The article also contains a very useful section entitled Things Every Pet Parent Should Know About Salmonella and Raw Feeding. If you feed raw, are thinking about feeding raw, or are afraid to feed raw, you should read this article. http://healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/archive/2016/11/28/raw-pet-food-salmonella.aspx

Help! My Pet Gets Car Sick and/or Nauseous

None of us, including our pets, have a good time when they get nauseous and vomit. Car travel can be especially difficult. As I learned with my Golden Retriever Tikken, pets can be very nauseous and not vomit. Tikken did not vomit in the car but drooled so excessively that the fur on her chest was soaked after even a short ride. It got to the point where she felt so bad, one day she just refused to get within twenty feet of the car. Fortunately, Tikken’s car sickness resolved by letting her ride in the back seat instead of the crate, but for others, it is more difficult.

When asked by clients for advice on car sickness, my standard recommendation has always been the spice/herb ginger. An easy way to administer it is to get some ginger snap cookies, just make sure that they contain real ginger. However, ginger is not the only alternative. Dr. Karen Becker has outlined several remedies to consider if your pet becomes nauseous in this blog post – http://healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/archive/2016/09/04/upset-stomach-remedies.aspx
