HEALTH ALERT! – Be Careful with Over-The-Counter Flea Products

Friday, May 8th, 2009

An article entitled, Burns Linked to Meds on the Sun Journal’s web site (http://www.sunjournal.com/story/316289-3/LewistonAuburn/Burns_linked_to_meds/), reports on a dog that had to be euthanized due to a reaction to the application of an over-the-counter topical flea preventative purchased at a grocery store.

It was reported that the product caused chemicals burns on all four of the guardian’s dogs. The burns on one dog were so severe that he had to be euthanized. While the other three dogs are recovering, they are still in pain.

It is important to remember that flea and tick preventives for our pets are chemicals that must be toxic to fleas in order to work and can cause reactions, sometimes severe, in some pets. This is why it is imperative that pet guardians discuss the use of said products with their pet’s veterinarian before they are used. Not all products are safe for all pets. Your veterinarian will consider your pet’s species, overall health, and other pets in the family when selecting an appropriate flea and tick treatment for your pet.
